crack in muffler box
 

anyone have any experience with this? I am running aftermarket dundon headers with the stock muffler box. Jamie any ideas?

The 991and 997 mufflers are similar. With the titanium rear centers on the Rs this was very common when running side bypass or headers with no cats and side bypass.
The steel centers are way more durable.
It’s fixable. You could try to warranty but will need to put stock system back on
you don’t want to track the car with the muffler like that.
Oh and if you keep running those headers get his center or a steel center Oem.

This happened to my buddies RS with Fabspeed LTH headers also, covered under warranty. I hear that using the GT3's steel rear muffler will help with this instead of the factory titanium one on the RS.

This is why the Ti center went in the box when I did side muffler delete.
On the 997’s I cracked all parts except the headers themselves but the 991’s system seems more durable.

just find a welder in your area that welds titanium, it will be as good as new!

Exactly that. The moment you put aftermarket headers on your oem center is on borrowed time. Put a bypass there while u mend the oem piece.

Wouldn't a Sharkwerks center delete fix this nicely?

It may be able to be fixed, give me a call or email. If you have a good relationship with your dealer you may be able to get warranty service on it as well. We've seen stock cars with Ti mufflers and track time do the same thing. This failure, not meeting sound, and flow restriction on big horsepower builds are the big reasons we built our Lifetime Center Muffler.

A center bypass isn't a good fix as the car will lose power, be very loud (the headers and side deletes with center delete means there is no muffler at all) and will drone on the highway...

Also get this fixed asap, if the crack turns into a hole the hot exhaust gasses can damage the engine...

same if you delete side muffler. stock center muffler alone can't handle the heat.

It would be difficult to clean the inside surface of the weld. You wouldn't want carbon contamination in a Ti weld.

I had the same issue. Jaime helped me diagnose the problem. I have a good relationship with my service manager and it was replaced under warranty. It's just a matter of time until it happens again though. Hate that horrible buzzing sound you get every time the valves open and close.

Our Lifetime GT3 Mufflers were made to address the failures of the OEM muffler, to reduce the dB's for sound restricted tracks, or for those that like to make noise open it up and sing! They'll be ready in November!
