Default Titanium Roll Cage

Interesting article from Akrapovic:

http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.titaniu...dustrial2_.pdf

Any thoughts?

This plus some other Ti parts would reduce the mass of GT3 significantly.

Wonder if Akrapovic is making the titanium cage for the new GT2 RS which will be part of that weissach option.

Really? That's it?

IMO one of the coolest upgrades possibly available and no interest?

What if it's painted PTS?

If a standard cage is $2200-2500ish then how much would one of these cost? 10+?

First thing that needs to be determined is whether Porsche can figure out how to get it into the US market. Apparently they don't possess the skill in this area of BMW.

I'm still baffled by how BMW pulled that off.

That being said Ti would be very neat, but very different set of requirements for a proper built cage compared to 4130. I have no doubt we will see more development/implementation in the future, but it will certainly include a hefty price tag.

Titanium is so 2010, how about a Magnesium rollbar? Afterall, Magnesium is the lightest metal known to man currently! I know Magnesium isn't an easy metal to work with, but imagine the performance benefits. Obviously Mag is extremely light, I don't know how it's structural dynamics would be in use of something like a safety cage. But I'd love to see more use of Magnesium where applicable.

Magnesium is flammable (a ribbon ignites at 473 C) - probably don't want to be strapped to a burning piece of magnesium

That'd be lithium! Seriously though, since you can vary the thickness, strength to weight ratio is more important. According to wikipedia, typical Ti alloy weighs 4420 kg/m3, with a tensile strength of 1000 MPa compared to 1800 kg/m3 and 135-285 MPa for Mg alloy. So Ti might be 2.5 times the weight of Mg, but it's four times as strong.

Was thinking the same thing. Mg ribbon was one of the highlights of middle school chemistry.

Anyone possibly know of someone manufacturing a 'harness bar' version out of Aluminum? I'm not looking to install 50 more lbs in the car if possible... and just would like a lightweight Harness Bar to hold me in the seat better for AutoX and occasional track day?

Best Regards,
Dave
