Putting film on windshield.
I'm finally to the point where I'm going to put the GT3 on the track a few times this season and had most of the GT3 wrapped with xpel over the winter. I'm contemplating putting some type of window film on the windshield to protect from stone chips and pitting. Is this a good idea and if so are there any downsides to putting the film on. Does it affect any type of visibility and lastly, any recommendations on brand or type. Thanks

Clearplex
Been there done that numerous times. Clearplex on my last Carrera S, last GT3 and next GT3. Much better than other films I've used on previous Porsches but the installer is more important that the material. Still, I think Clearplex is a superior product.

Don't do it.
Save the money for replacement windshields.
Thank me later.

Have had the opposite experience as some here have stated . car goes to my PP shop guys Saturday
for install of Graffiti film, will be second one since day one with the car . No wiper chatter , or vision
issues and a lot less hassle/cost than replacing windscreen . Did that twice on the last 911 taking a different path with this car all good thus far .

The next time i track mine i am going to put a 6 inch strip of xpel tracwrap around the edge of the windshield to protect a rock from hitting it, since that is a weak spot. Basically outline it. Probably 3 layers.

Clearplex has saved me lots of money over the years on a variety of cars, and as others have said the most important thing as in all things ppf is the installer.

I would save your money.
This doesn't really help much.
I had it done TWICE on my GT-R, and I had to replace the windshield TWICE.
I had Clearplex on my first windshield and a rock on the track at Chuckwalla cracked it. I had the windshield replaced and had Clearplex installed again. Literally one week later, on track at Laguna Seca, a rock hit it and cracked it.
Not worth it.

My personal experience was mixed. I had Graffiti film on for 3 Smokies events. My windshield survived, but the film looked like ... well it looked really bad. When I removed the graffiti film the windshield was pitted in several places so while it didn't crack, it wasn't unscathed either.
I replaced it with ClearPlex - I installed the ClearPlex myself. Difficult to apply and looked pretty shabby after 1 Smokies event. I removed the ClearPlex when I traded that car and do not plan to install clear film on my current GT3RS.
In Florida your street auto insurance policy is required to replace a cracked windshield with zero deductible.

I have had it on both my GT3's. I rather have a windshield installed at the factory than a replacement. So I always cover them. Clearplex lasted about 2 ½ years before it needed replacement.
