GT3 vs GT3 RS Sound @ vmax
Many people say, incl. very experienced motoring journalists, that the sound of the GT3 RS is dramatically weaker at 8,800 vs 9,000 rpm of the normal GT3 and the difference isn't simply 200 rpm ?? Comments pls from those who know

Well, firstly in anything over 2nd gear the RS actually red lines at 8600, which feels too low. But to call it anything like 'weak' sounding is very, very far from the truth. Sure the GT3 sounds more angry, but it also feels more strained. Though the RS probably could do with a few 100 more, even with a helmet it makes your ears hurt when thrashing it.

It is a different pitch...RS a little lower ...GT3 a little higher and louder
both cars sound better than almost anything except a 458 or Scud (or Shelby-Voodoo 350GT or LS7 for V8 American rumble)

My opinion based on everything I've read and some very knowledgeable guys(very) I've spoken too is that...
GT3 9000 red line gives you that banshee scream but smaller 3.8 displacement and high 9000 red line was a culprit in early valve train issues.
4.0 RS with much lowered rev range shaves some off blood curtailing scream but with other revisions such as additional oil squirters, increased oil pressure... issues resolved. So far proof is in the pudding as far as we can tell.

I guess I can contribute as well, unless i'm misunderstanding the question. I've owned both and driven them pretty extensively. The 3.8 sounds great as it revs to it's redline. The 4.0 sounds insane as it revs it's own redline. As in, ear piercingly louder. I don't understand the fixation of the rpm level differences between the two. But to each his own.

I've owned both and both produce a beautiful noise. I did 8k in the GT3 and am up to 7k in the RS.
That said, I am firmly of the opinion that the GT3 sounds better, is louder and feels like it revs more freely.
I would love to see a more scientific evaluation on a dyno with a side by side comparison.
If there is anything I miss about the GT3, it's those 200 RPM and the flowing lines of that body without the vents and air intakes.
A bit off topic, but if Porsche is reading this, I would take a 3.8 over a 4.0 in a 911 R body. Pair that 9k with a stick and a SMFW and it wouldn't get much better for a road going car... and I'd take sofas.

Wrrrightt (as dr. Evil would say) ...this is why nearly every GT Porsche fan was hoping the .2GT3 came with the 4.0L 🙄
