interesting, does putting a RSS Center X pipe on the RS improve things dramatically ? https://rennlist.com/forums/991-gt3-...-in-stock.html

Not having the 9k rpm redline (or more accurately the aggressive sound that goes with it) might be a showstopper ! To my ears there is a BIG difference in sound between 991 GT3 and RS. RS is king of the hill, no question about it, but just for sound, GT3 takes the cake by a mile !

I think some are confusing volume with pitch. RS is definitely louder inside the cabin (quite a lot IMO), it was one of the first things unnoticed. At full chat, GT3's higher pitched scream makes it seem louder but in reality I don't believe it is. Would be great to see dB readings for both at various RPM.

Agreed. The pitch of each motor has a very slight difference at redline. The regular GT3 having a little bit of a metallic pitch spike in the last 200-300rpm. Albeit taking longer to get there and like someone already mentioned, feeling a bit labored.
However, we're splitting hairs in terms of overall sound with both motors at redline. If you own and drive only the 3.8 or only the 4.0, you are not missing out on any marginal glorious sound differences as either approach their limit.
And therefore to address the original post inquiry:
"Many people say, incl. very experienced motoring journalists, that the sound of the GT3 RS is dramatically weaker at 8,800 vs 9,000 rpm of the normal GT3 and the difference isn't simply 200 rpm ?? Comments pls from those who know"
My answer to that from personal experience of owning both, is there is absolutely nothing "dramatically weaker" about the sound of either car at redline. They both scream to the point to where your smile won't know the difference.

Nick sent me over some footage of him testing his launch control out the other weekend with our new Long Tube Competition Race Header System. Best sounding Porsche I have heard to date, I need it in my life...bucket list item added haha.
