Default FABSPEED MOTORSPORT | 991 GT3 Long Tube Race Headers Development

Our R&D team has been very busy. It has been a long time coming but we are almost ready to release our ultimate power solution for 991 GT3 / GT3 RS owners. Our Dynojet has been well used as we refined and proved the components we crafted. We've experimented with several designs to extract maximum gains and deliver to you a complete performance package. Stay tuned as we give a behind the scenes look while we get ready to launch. Next week we'll dive into things more in-depth!

You guys have your own 3D CNC mandrel tube bender in house?

We certainly do! Take a look at our "Behind the Performance" thread here for some more insight on our facility. You're pretty local, come stop by sometime i'll give you a tour of the place.

Yeah that would qualify as one! Huge investment no doubt but end result will be obvious. No chop sawing J bends etc!

J bends limit the flexibility of the overall design when compared to a beast of a machine like that not to mention far less welds!

So any other pics of the headers? My RS is coming and now I have options.
Choices are always good. Performance and construction are equally important to me.

There certainly are. We are currently building our final proven design and we'll dive into our prototypes, dyno numbers, and media content in short time. While we wrap that up let's talk more about our development process.

When the first 991 GT3s landed on North American soil, we started developing Race Headers for enthusiasts wanting to maximize the performance of their track weapon. Our initial short tube modular header design was very successful and received praise as one of the first aftermarket race headers available for the 991 GT3.

Earlier in the year, Phil, an avid Porsche enthusiast came to us in search of a solution to gain an edge on the track—custom long tube race headers. Not only did we want to please one of our long time customers, but we welcomed the challenge to produce a better performing header. We immediately took in Phil’s GT3 and started analyzing the stock exhaust, the window in the rear vehicle cavity in which we can work, and how we can extract maximum power.

Our engineering team dove in and came up with various base designs which we began to refine with testing on our Dynojet dyno. During these dyno testing sessions, we also tested and developed our 991 GT3 Lightweight Competition Exhaust System - as seen below.

We installed our custom Long Tube Race Header prototype on Phil’s GT3 for real world testing on the track. Over the next several months our headers were put to the test at numerous track events and our prototype performed quite well. Nice work, Phil! At this point, we put further development on pause to focus on getting up to speed with the new DezignWorks Laser Scanning Module on our Romer 3D Digitizing Arm, optimizing our Dynojet with the latest modules to provide the most accurate results, and experimenting with other new technologies. We also brought to life full exhaust suites on turbocharged newcomers: the Porsche 718 and 991.2, and Ferrari 488.

We were recently approached to enhance a GT3 RS - and welcomed the opportunity to refine our long tube header design further- and we did. Tomorrow we will delve into our updated Side Muffler Bypass Pipes and more details about the development process of our headers.

Throughout the Long Tube Race Header development process, we also took a look at our Side Muffler Bypass Pipes and how we can improve them. To provide the ultimate track solution for the 991 GT3 / GT3RS, we are now utilizing premium Helical valves.

We chose to use Helical Valves on our 991 GT3 / GT3RS track exhaust systems for their unprecedented quality - which have been proven by many OEM manufacturers such as McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and many more. Helical valves are an integral part of our Side Muffler Bypass pipes, opening and closing with precision to control the gas flow and optimizing engine back-pressure for improved performance. Helical’s extensive experience in high-volume OEM automotive applications has led to standard features such as an extremely durable pneumatic actuator, precision flat sealing faces inside the valve, stiffening ribs and high-temperature bearings at both ends of the butterfly spindle.

We’ve also moved our O2 bungs from the headers to the Side Muffler Bypass pipes in order to maintain factory-like functionality - allowing them to read all cylinders. This design will replace our existing SMBP’s allowing you to upgrade to our Long Tube Race Header design at any time in the future. The move was also necessitated in order to not compromise the design of our collector - which we are looking forward to discussing tomorrow!

We were recently approached to enhance a GT3 RS - and welcomed the opportunity to refine our long tube header design further. We can certainly craft our own collectors but we always keep an open mind and consider all options. We decided to source the highest quality collectors and the years of experience that comes along with them - we’ve happily paired up with Burns Stainless.

If you are not familiar with Burns Stainless - their merge collectors are motorsport proven and have been adopted by NHRA racers and NASCAR engine builders, and widely used in NHRA, ALMS, FIA-GT, and Grand Am as well.

Our decision to utilize Burns Stainless slip on collectors was easy, their superior design and 30 years of proven performance in motorsport racing provided more than enough reasoning. Their collectors are custom engineered using Burns' proprietary X-design parametric computer program. The collectors combine high flow and high velocity to increase and broaden an engine's torque curve all the way to the horsepower peak and beyond. Featuring the highest quality fabrication and TIG-welding, each Burns merge collector is completely hand finished inside for a smooth, nonturbulent merge of exhaust gasses for maximum power gains.

We experimented with several different header designs - such as a stepped variant of our initial long tube design, a non-stepped design with standard weld on collectors (pictured below), and a non-stepped design with Burns Stainless slip on collectors.

One header prevailed in power on the dyno...

Stay tuned, Friday we dig into the dyno data you’ve been waiting for!
