Default The 960 / FeFi delayed because of VW diesel scandal?

Yes, so says published reports from Automotive News:

It’s unclear when this long-in-development program will get off the ground. The two-seat midengine sports car is expected to cost around $250,000 and slot between the top-end 911 and any supercar entry. Inside the company, the project has been referred to as a Ferrari fighter or FeFi. If built, the car is expected to carry a quad-turbo flat eight-cylinder engine producing around 650 hp.

Timing estimates have ranged between 2017 and 2020. It seems clear now that the early end of that time frame will not happen. The end-of-the-decade timeline could prove difficult, too. One source suggests production timing now has been pushed back until 2026. With Volkswagen reeling financially from the diesel scandal, the program certainly is a candidate for the back burner.

If the 2026 timeline proves even close, then what's the point?

A decade from now, everyone will be KERS or some form of a hybrid, if not pure EV. And who knows what government regs will be like by then.

My interpretation: 2017-2020 would have been the window to share a face-lifted R8/Huracan platform, but if development is not well underway (and I do not think it is), it won't happen. 2026 would be in-line with the R8/Huracan replacement, and I agree with ipse dixit - by then I would expect a variation of the Mission E powertrain, not a quad-turbo ICE.

This isn't new news, factory people had said project was put on ice many months ago but no one knew if it was going to get going again after VW issue had some time behind it and subsided but the economic impact is widespread. Specs will change substantially when project gets going again IF it gets going again.

PAG always recoups their investment in the motorsports division... MY23 for a modified 9R9 from the 919?

If VW drops the R8, then the 960 might be a go. If not, no need to build a competitor to the R8. Also, I believe building the 960 will hurt the image of the 911 and impact sales.

A 960 wouldn t be nothing but another R8 Huracan a la' Cayenne-Q7-Touraeg or
Macan-Q5-whatelse way

i am fine with that as long as they make more sporty sofas when i need a VW suv or sedan

not at all when it comes to motorspot icons then i want bloody unique contents

Well in a effort to save money they have just renamed the "960" project .....now it's known internally as project "Cayman 8 cyl"

Audi is reportedly developing an R6 now, based on the 718 boxster platform.

I think sadly fxz might be correct in that the 960 could very well just be an extension of the R8/Huracan line.

What else could it be? Would it be allowed to step on Huracan toes?

Or use Huracan DNA to challenge Aventador and so on? Doubtful...

Porsche platform-sharing the 981/991, and Audi building a car to compete with its own TTS/TTRS? And in a relatively low-volume segment? Both highly doubtful, IMO...

I can't see how the 960 was ever anything other than a platform-sharing of the R8/Huracan. Porsche has successfully tested the $200-300k waters; I do think there is/was plenty of room for a more track-focused RWD Porsche variant. Rumor is the upcoming high-performance Huracans will continue to be AWD, and of course all R8s will be.
