Default helmet on airplane...carryon or checked?

Flying to Europe for ED and have booked some track days and planning to bring my own helmet.

Is it wise to just bring helmet as a carry on vs. checking it in luggage. What do people here do?

I'm just concerned about it being thrown around even padded inside my suitcase, but I also have enough as a carry on to manage without my helmet...

Not to mention worrying about it getting lost or stolen.

If you have a nicer helmet you have to carry it on. I always do when flying to races etc.

Pro-tip: you can fit lots of toiletries and clean socks in a helmet.

Carry on. Puma bag and Sparco bags can hold HANs and helmet and squeeze into standard overheads.

Carry on every race weekend. Never check it especially after watching how guys throw the bags around. Plus if they lose my Stilo helmet good luck getting enough money back to pay for it

I check mine. If you fly any commuter jets it won't fit. Bell makes a great helmet bag that has a lot of cushion and works well at protecting it. Make sure to include extra ID inside in addition to your bag tag.

Guess I'm the outlier here, but I fly a lot and schlepping bags around gets old plus I'm usually carrying all my electronics as carry on- lap top, iPad, cameras, batteries and cables for the race car video, and that's enough ****e to carry.

I have a huge head and my helmet/bag only fits on a few planes. If I take it out of the bag it fits in some overheads; I've also been able to put it under a seat in one case where it would not fit in the overhead. Odd that it fit under a seat and not in the overhead?? I've also been able to convince them to put it in a closet a few times....

I always carry mine on.

I don't trust baggage handlers with anything I value. This is especially true if you travel through scum infested Brazil, theft is out of control in those airports.

I carry on...I have the Stilo helmet bag but if you keep your hans in the bag it won't fit in the overhead compartment...at least in that bag.

I'd never trust baggage handling for it. I do know some people who over night ship theirs.

I carry it on. As has been mentioned, you can stuff quite a bit in the helmet. I can even tuck my iPad at one end of my Bell bag which also has an external pocket that accommodates my noise cancelling headphones.

After seeing the abuse that luggage can take from baggage handlers I'm nervous about checking my helmet.

Just checked mine this morning. It's in a padded bag so should be fine.

I always hand-carry my helmet. Yes, I have a giant head, so I can fit my headphone case and other things in it as well, lol.
