That is very interesting news to hear from two sources that PTS is not painted in house. Does that mean all painted parts including the body shell (versus just some parts)? This sure sounds like it could be a huge bottleneck on production of PTS cars. Otoh it might mean there is potential to do more PTS if the third party could ramp up.

Very surprising news. Now it would be nice to know who the 3rd party is?

True PTS are sent off to a 3rd party for all models be it a Stuttgart production car or Leipzig production car. That's why the limited capacity. It also takes time to validate and inspect the finish to pass Porsche's own standard.

The so called 'fake' PTS like the black, orange and yellow on the R are painted in house, that part is correct.
Looks like Mr. PTS just got schooled

No problem. We are here to learn from each other.
I must tell all of you that this is the first time ever
that I hear that Porsche sends all PTS cars to a third
party for paint. If true, I am really & truly surprised.
As Reagan said, 'trust but verify'. I'll report back when
I get this confirmed as 'fact'.

Wonder if this 3rd party (if verified....) is the reason for the "issues" on various PTS cars (e.g., roof issues on Maritime and Mexico cars I know...)

I'm also very surprised to hear that true PTS is painted at different location. However it does explain why Porsche makes it hard to order PTS.

Ferrari uses a company called Carrozzeria Zanasi (in the same town) to do their PTS cars. I think Ferrari may now own part of this company. They do special orders and special liveries.

Don't say that.

Before we always assume PTS cars are all painted at Porsche's state of the art paint shop that they 'say' can paint any colour.

But now it turns out isn't the case, true PTS cars' body and panels are send out to third party and basically hand painted one by one.

I was quite shocked to hear that Friday at the Leipzig plant.

+1

Eduardo's expertise and contribution on PTS and exclusive options have been outstanding! I think I lost count how many times I had used his posts to spec out my cars!

Why not just hold a lottery for employees and give the winners a $200k bonus each, then the cars can go to real enthusiasts......?

Hopefully they at least come with the stipulation that they can't be resold for a minimum of five years.

Thanks for the cool video. It sure looks like it's quite the process taken there. So are you saying the standard colours are painted at the Ferrari factory? Reason I ask is that I've heard many of regular painted cars need major detailing once the customer gets their car. Wondering what the finish is like on the special painted ones?

I've been in the Ferrari factory and have looked at the cars in some detail after they have been painted, they are nearly flawless. I think the issue has been more of shipping (films and handling) and dealer prep (removing films) and improperly washing fairly soft paint. Every Ferrari color is just as soft as the black that Porsche applies. Very soft and easily scratched.

people really care this much about these silly colors?

People are really that upset that they can't paint their 911 R in atomic explosion orange?

Really?
