I was told they had maxed out on black slots. Makes sense- they have to sell a lot of GT and RAW to stick with the marketing material theme.

If the car was offered in almost any other orange I would have opted for that, but the lava does not work for me on this car.

Anyone getting a yellow one?

Has anyone heard of anybody ordering a Lava Orange R? I had a LO turbo and agree, it's not special enough for an R. I bet they will be very rare.

Well, I think it's time get another conversation going re: the
original colors of the limited production 1967 911R. Daniel
(Lessthan3mph) has done excellent research on this subject
& I know he will add mightily to this discussion.

A few months ago Daniel informed me, according to research
he had done, that the colors of the original 911R were:

'feuerrot-fire red' (prototype R2),
'blutorange/tangerine' (prototype R3),
'zitrongelb' (Prototype R4),
'slate grey' (#13),
'cadillac gold' (#15),
'reventlow blue' (#20),
All the others were 'light ivory'

***
That conversation with Daniel led to my own
minor research on the topic. And here is the
website that has helped me visualize the colors
of the original 911R's. According to them, there
were 4 prototypes built and 20 customer cars.

http://www.pbase.com/archive_racing_porsche/inbox

***

I have seen in person only two 911R's in my lifetime. The first
one was one at the first PCA Parade I ever attended - in 1981-
which was held in Asheville, N.C. It was on displayed at the
massive concours held on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate
built by George Vanderbilt. It was the best Porsche concours
I have ever attended. And nothing has ever equaled it in the
intervening 35 years!

*

The second 911R I saw was #013, which is presently in the
private automotive collection of Jack Croul (former co-owner
of Behr Process Corp) in the vicinity of Newport Beach, Ca.
I visited his automotive warehouse a few years ago & took
these photos:

***

Interestingly enough, this car (#13) appears as 'Slate Grey' on that
list:

I happen to know one of its previous (early) owners, Dirk Layer.
So I will email to see if he can add to our knowledge base on the
original color of this 911R.

***
I also personally know one of the owners of #017.

I will try to contact Peter Kitchak, who has moved to
Napa (California) to start a winery*, to see if he can
add anything to this discussion.

If we have enough interest in the discussion of the
colors of the original 911Rs, perhaps we can start
a dedicated thread on the subject!

Eduardo

I was in contact with Porsche's historic department just a few weeks ago re. 911 R #13. According to them the original colour of that car was light ivory.

Thanks Stockholm996RR, that corroborates what another R customer told me they had learned as uncovered by Porsche Classic. (I will not name this person) So I feel more comfortable posting what I had heard now that a second person seems to be saying the same. Here's what I was told:

All production cars were painted hellelfenbein (ivory) except one car painted gold metallic.
And it is what I was alluding to about the colours of the production cars being controversial in a previous post. Much of what has been the conventional knowledge is that there were three production cars painted colours other than Light ivory: namely, Cadillac gold, Slate grey, and Reventlow blue.

This more recent information would suggest that only the gold car was painted by the factory (that has a fascinating story attached to it, and perhaps someone with more direct knowledge than me will chime in). The Slate grey one and the Reventlow blue cars would possibly have been repainted. Of course, there are other R's that were also repainted, including chassis #1, which had its stripes changed from red to green, and others like chassis 4 that appeared in Gulf type livery).

Unfortunately, since I cannot verify that information first hand, it is possible there is more to this story.

But obviously this would be of some importance to people who have PTS allocations and are hoping to recreate original colours. As it stands, Light ivory is not approved. Neither is Cadillac gold. Neither are Lemon yellow and Tangerine. And it remains to be seen whether Fire red (86D) is the same as on prototype 2. Reventlow blue is not approved, and now may not be original anyway.

So anyone hoping to have gone with Slate grey, as the only approved colour from the PTS list, that "may" have been original, should be aware of this potential wrinkle and try to confirm this info for themselves. I have heard rumours that Slate grey would have been a top pick for one or more R customers, as it is both attractive, and potentially would have borne historic import.

Also if Stockholm, or anyone else, can confirm about the Reventlow blue car being originally Light ivory, that would be helpful. (Perhaps it would be fun to discuss Lance Reventlow and Scarab Racing at that point.)

My opinion is that of the 50 PTS 911R, owners should pick the color that they like. Back in 1967, I'm sure these 20 customers didn't pick their colors due to "historical importance". That is just my 2 cent. I'm working very hard with Porsche Exclusive to build a truly special R and no, my color has no "historical importance" whatsoever! LOL

^ Couldn't agree more. However, for some customers who may be particularly interested in the history of the company and of the original R, a colour with a back story might be one they'd like more. Certainly there are customers who have reached out to others on this forum for information on the 1967 cars. I wasn't suggesting all 50 owners should try to replicate the original cars. Just trying to uncover some facts about the 24 cars, that's all.

And here's one delivered to Willich, Germany.

At least another picked up at Regensberg.

Cars are arriving!! I'm quite happily surprised to see the yellow one (above), and not just white and GT silver this early on during production. I guess it won't be long before a LO and black car are spotted!

I am aware of one 911R that was ordered under one of those "Special Color" of Lava Orange. It was ordered without the stripes, as either the red nor the green stripes would not quite blend well with a Lava Orange base color.

Great work Daniel. This yellow seems to look like "Speed". Any info on the type of yellow?

Thanks but not my photo. Just scouring the web. As for yellow, I would have guessed this was RY. If you compare, say, the side mirror with the calipers (which are almost certainly SY), the mirror looks lighter more like RY. It would be unusual for a PTS car to be produced so early imv, and RY is one of the Special colours, not PTS.

I met someone at FOS Goodwood on Friday who has ordered Lava Orange with Matt White Stripes. I suggested he should have green side decals so it would resemble a salmon / cream cheese sandwich with cucumber
