By selling to the masses (making more units), it just makes the custom crank or pistons for 4.2L more economical to produce

I thought the GT3 RS had a very special crank. Apparently not a $10,000 crank.

Even new GTS is not going to be slow with ~450hp and lots of torque...
The .2 Carrera S is only 9 seconds behind the GT3's Ring time. That massive torque probably makes it faster in most real world circumstances.

The question you have to ask yourslef is what is really important in your sports car: is it having the fastest car or the most fun? Those two roads are starting to diverge.

Tires, suspension, gearing and weight are huge factors in performance besides just HP and torque. So there are many ways for future GT3 models to differentiate themselves.

It's difficult to construct a flat 6 that displaces more than 4.0 liters (pistons get too big), and AP said in the past that the factory could go no larger on the Mezger engine.

For the move from 3.6 to 3.8 with the 997 facelift, they increased the bores only (and added steel cylinder liners, as well). For the Mezger 4.0 they changed the crank.

Most aftermarket Mezger tuners (Sharkwerks, BBI, Leh Keen's car, which was built by Autometrics, etc.) will take a 3.6 to a 4.0 by boring, and then go to a 4.2 (BBI claims 4.25) with a crank.

It's not that they can do something that Porsche can't, it's just that the tuners are working in a very different, much smaller market. E.g., the Sharkwerks crank alone costs over $10K. Porsche has to sell to the masses.
Thanks for the explanation. yeah I remember that someone said porsche could not fit any engine larger than 4.0 into a 911. 4.2 this number looks odd to me. At first I thought maybe someone from porsche leak this number out? But now I know it just a stupid math calculation, 4.0+(4.0-3.8).

with the above GT2RS 700HP and GT3RS 530HP windows
indeed the production capacity is filled

no room for either a GT2 and a GT3

maybe a converging GT3 a la 991.2 GTS but 500HP, suspensions, steering, wing?

We've already seen the 991.2 GT3 testing. It's coming.
