Default Engine Oil Pressure?

The engine oil pressure in normal driving was above the upper limit of the gauge. It was reading 73psi under all iterations of throttle application implying the pressure was over 73psi. I know this is not good or normal, has anyone else experienced this. Could it be a faulty oil pressure gauge or is it a bad motor or some other problem?! Like to have it fixed before next weekend as I have a track day Thanks

possibly bad sender

Trip to the dealer for sure!

Ground fault, sensor fault. As stated get it to the dealer.

Hey guys. I have taken the car to the dealer and done a full service the past two days. Oil change and all. I let them know that the cars oil pressure was running really high and they said they would look into it. I got the car back today and low and behold as the engine warmed up on the drive home, the oil pressure started shooting up to 73 psi again at every degree of throttle application unless off throttle. The dealer said that they found no fault codes or issues with the car. I am hoping its just a sensor issue and that maybe the oil pressure isnt actually running that high. Maybe the sensor is just inaccurate?

I'd get a 2nd opinion. Best of luck.

At 3000 rpm's and those temperatures the indicated pressure is high. With no codes I'd lean towards the gauge. The dealer could connect the car to PIWIS and read the pressures.

only if engine cold 73psi (5bar) would be ok - i do have such pressures in different cars filled with 10W-60...

which oil are you running?
how many miles on the engine?

but your issue seems to be a error...
low oil pressure - would be a problem - but than also the warning light will pop up.

hopefully it is just a sensor.

I would think that the dealer at least verified the complaint...that's the least they can do. If you hook up the PIWIS it will read the pressures off the same sensor the cluster is reading. Unless there's a problem with the cluster or the CAN communication between sensor,DME and cluster, the pressure would read the same. The only way to test the actual running pressure, independent of the car's sensor(oil pressure sender) is to remove the sensor and install a mechanical gauge in its place and take measurements that way(which I don't even know it's possible in this car). Technicians are relying too much on computers and do not investigate further unless a specific code is set. Most of it has to do with flat rate and especially warranty work which doesn't pay enough.
From what Macca has described, the oil pressures can be calibrated through software in this car,so a second opinion is warranted at this point.

^ This is exactly what you should have asked the dealer to do. Take it back, when you are seeing these crazy readings, and make them connect PIWIS to see what is the real reading of the pressures.

My position was if the sender is bad it may have thrown a code where as if it is the gauge it may not. Either way the PIWIS would be the referee. Sad to say not all dealers are not equal in the service department. The OP should ask if the service department connected PIWIS.

They won't touch the car with a 10 foot pole without an error code,I'm very positive about that! I know how flat rate works, how warranty works and how technicians and service advisors think.

With that said, you need to be a really dumba** technician(pardon my French) not to connect your PIWIS when the car is in. It takes 5 min and they're using the scan tool even when adjusting the oil level or " cleaning the carpets ". That's all they know...

I'm curious. What ranges are you guys seeing on pressure? Engine fully warm at highway speed I'm in the 50s. Rev it up to 7k RPM and I'll get mid 70s which is in the red zone on the gauge.

^^^^
I took my car in when I hit 68PSI on a hard pull. The oil level was at max normal.

If I was the OP I'd get it to the service centre and have it checked - possible broken sensor or overfill....
