How does the strip looks so “puffy” and indented into the leather of the steering wheel?

I chose the gaffers tape to try on the steering wheel and the results are OK. I think I pulled the tape too tight, but it will work for now.

If anyone wants to try the tape, PM me and I will send it to you as long as you agree to send it to the next guy.

Thanks for all of the input.

The steering wheel comes with a sewn-in black center strip. The gaffers tape conforms to the shape of the black strip.

3M 1080 Wrap Matte Red

That should do your wheel and a bunch of friend's wheels as well.

This is made from yellow leather. I ordered a 12” strip on eBay. I sanded the leather on a small belt sander so it would be thin ......took a little while to get it right and it does.

These are the yellow Brembo brakes....that’s why yellow leather!

This is the adhesive I used to attach it to the leather steering wheel. It is easily cleaned up with Coleman fuel. Do not use acetone or MEK.

I realize this is a rather old post/thread, but just thought I’d add some pics of the centering stripe I added to my Macan GTS’s steering wheel. I used a gloss 3M 1080 vinyl in a color that comes close to matching the factory garnet red accents in my interior. This will also give those that have a carbon fiber wheel an idea of the results that can be achieved. IMO the gloss automotive vinyl is just about perfect for achieving a near OEM look on the smooth gloss finish of the carbon fiber.

Cheers everyone.

How close is the 3M 1080 M13 red to Guards Red? Did most folks just stretch and apply or heat it/stretch and apply?

As mentioned I assume the sample is more than enough.

I can’t comment on the color difference.

As far as applying it, just very slight stretch while wrapping it around. No heat required at all. I wrapped it so the seam was at the bottom rear portion of the steering wheel, meaning you couldn’t see it from any angle. Also just a single wrap around, no multiple layers (you want it to appear as flush with the surface as possible). I cut the length of the tape so it wrapped once around, with a very small overlap at the end. IIRC, it was around 4.20 inches in length.

I found it best to start at the lower rear portion of the steering wheel, around the front, up and around, ending back at the lower rear portion with a very slight overlap.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the tips...I went the way of the Pro Spike Gaffers tape...best and cheapest mod ever. Very happy with the result.
It was the only thing missing on my new steering wheel.

Thanks for the suggestion. How wide was it/did you have to cut it?

It’s been quite a while since I did this, and I no longer have the Macan, so I don’t recall the width. Best bet would probably be to take a look at a Porsche that has the steering wheel center stripe from the factory and measure that. Or perhaps someone here in the forum with such a vehicle could chime in.

To answer this and to provide an additional option for other owners in the future, I just used Yellow ACRYLIC paint on mines and it came out perfect. Acrylic does withstand heat pretty well up to 200 degrees F. And even beyond that they tend to not melt, but rather begin to fade. This is a cheap and easy option, just requires steady hands and a small narrow tip paint brush lol I am going to clean up the lines a bit more to make the edges "crisper" when I get a chance. @tresean1

Yellow gaffers tape which gets filthy after a bunch of track days - looks race car! I never see that when I yanking the wheel wildly around, it's more of a C&C thing IMHO.
