Default Weather Break: GMG Track Day at Thermal with 991 GT3's and RS's

Hey guys,

While many of you are socked in with record snow falls and/or killer winter months, unfortunately relegating your car to garage duty....so I thought I would share some recent photos of our recent track day at Thermal this past week where we hosted our client's that have taken their car to our shop for upgrades or new client's that wanted to see what our cars are like on track after some GMG mod's.
The Lava Orange RS has our Full WC Track Package which consists of 19" HRE wheels and Hoosier R7's, along with our upgraded Brembo Brake Package (rotors/hats/pads). This combined with our GMG Harness bar, full header and muffler system, and full Track Alignment and Setup, this car is running times close to Cup cars!

Thermal is the perfect place to test and tune your car.....we have used it exclusively for it's different track layouts and the facility is simply fantastic!

@OP

Did you try running the 19" wheels over 410mm PCCB? I understand some wheels will fit but the clearance is tight. What was the rationale for the Brembo? Lighter or cheaper replacement of rotors?

No issues (from TC/ABS/SC) running 19" front and rear? Did you maintain the stock rake?

I'm still counting down the months before mine arrives and would very much like to go the 19" route.

Great looking cars and track James! Some have said that there is very little, if any, performance difference between the 991 GT3 and the 991 GT3RS at the track. Since you had both iterations at the track on the same day, can you tell us what differences did you observe between the two cars and is the RS noticeably faster going all out at the track?

We didn't try running with PCCB's as we wanted a more appropriate rotor/pad setup for track use while also saving a ton on replacement costs....the car stops much better with easier brake modulation vs the PCCB's. The Brembo setup is very impressive......I could hit the brakes hard on initial application and easily bleed off the brakes without activating ABS.....perfect for track usage.

And we had no issues with TC/ABS but we turn that off anyways....

Where the RS shines is on and off throttle, when you need TORQUE! Plus the aero grip level is higher in the RS with the bigger wing and vented front fenders. The RS doesn't rev as quickly as the GT3 but it's much more planted.....

The GT3 is a more wild ride while the RS us more composed and takes less effort to put in a good lap. At Thermal, I think a 2:11 in the RS and a 2:12.5 in the GT3, both with R7's, would be a fair estimate on laps times....

With cats?

It sounds AWESOME!!!

Do you (the owner) find its too loud for some tracks?

I'd like to run this setup but concerned I would be kicked out of some tracks.

Thanks for any thoughts you can share.

Thank you.

Hey James - I want get my GT3 dialed for R7's and maybe add a little vinyl to spice it up a little... can you have Scotty email me how I can make that happen. Also, what wheel is that Lava RS running? They look great!

I'm getting the RS for many reasons, none is better lap times than a standard GT3. However the real trackrats are about to chime in that there's no way the rs is worth the extra cheddar over the regular 3 for track work. And I agree. A reg 3 at let's say 50k less is for sure the better deal, especially when you can put 20 into it and most likely beat a stock RS on most tracks.

But then again. What do I know?? Bupkis.
There is no doubt that the GT3 is an exceptional value with regards to performance compared to the RS as it's approx $150K less (current market pricing) and no more than 1-1.5 seconds slower on most tracks....plus it's much easier and cheaper to run better tires on the stock 20" GT3 wheel setup vs the RS 20/21, plus you have to change the brakes for just about every aftermarket 19" wheel application on the RS if you have PCCB's where a non PCCB GT3 can bolt them on without any issues....

You buy the GT3 for a fun track weapon, you pay the premium for collectibility on the RS......but if the 991.2 GT3 and RS come N/A, there goes the value of the 991.1 RS......IMO...

Disclaimer, I only have a GT3 and GT4.....no RS WHAAAAAA
