New owner with engine temp question
Hello,
I bought my GT3 on 12/19 and today it was 65F, I was stuck in traffic and my water temp was 216 and the oil temp was 221. Once I got moving, they dropped to 178 and 196, respectively. Are these temps "normal"? I guess I am worried what they are going to be when it is summer here! A fellow Houstonian GT3 owner said that the temp should never exceed 225F, so I am a bit concerned.
Also, I have heard guys talking about a proper cool down...what techniques do people use? BYW, the car is a DD and is neither tracked, nor will ever be tracked...I know, I know, but it took me so damn long to finally get one.
Thanks,
Marc

That does seem a bit high.
In SoCal, where it's been around the low 60s of late, when I daily my car I generally see oil temps between 190-200, and water temp between 183-195. Maybe a bit higher if stuck in traffic, and lower if cruising on the freeway.
Cool down. Really only applies after a track session.

That doesn't seem abnormal to me depending on the traffic. I have been stuck in traffic with temps rising to 212-214 on the coolant and about the same for oil. Once you get the air flow going from the moving car the temps drop.

Was this the car sold in Houston that had 550 or so miles on it? If so, beautiful car! I made the call, got the sales price, and waited a day to call back to buy it and by then, it had sold!

The thermostat on these (991) cars is pretty flaky, some people have had theirs replaced many times. It happened to me once, where it stuck open, so the fans came on at full speed and it didn't warm up properly. It might be that you had the first symptom of failure. If it fails open or closed, it's not too serious, they will replace it for you. why it's working, I do find the temperature control really precise, it's quite impressive how much cooling these cars can generate, it's just one of the many small ways a GT3 is a bit better than regular 991s....

This exact same thing happened to me. I checked the coolant level from factory and it was a bit low (air pockets). Topped it off and actually showed an improvement (cooler) on the temp range. I also had the thermostat checked but it was all good.
