July or early Aug before the holiday shutdown.

Mine took 5 weeks to get. Spent a little over 3 weeks on ship. And the dealer may be hedging his bet on the delivery time.

Yep about 2017 Geneva for 991.2gt3 launch and 2018 model.

But, question is what are they going to build from July 2016?

Obviously R. But, what else? Has to be gt2rs or just keep making 991RS?

Good point. The R itself probably won't be enough to keep the GT division busy for very long so it might make sense that they'll extend RS production, especially given the demand. Or perhaps the R volumes will be higher than everyone's expecting?

Could be that R production is bigger than expected but I doubt it. I think Porsche will make one for each VIP customer in the US and make another 200-300 for ROW.

I really hope they show the "cup edition" alongside the R in Geneva. But more likely gt2/gt2rs.

What does the GT division do when a GT car isn't on the market? It appears as though everyone is convinced that there has to be a GT car of some sort in production each year so I'm wondering if that's true. Did the GT2 and its RS production fill the void between the RS 4.0 and 991 GT3?

Great point. Ever since I saw these (and other) cars selling for substantial premiums, I wondered if anyone actually pays tax on their gains. Highly doubt it.

I'm not convinced of it, but it would seem unusual for the GT division to go from simlultaneously producing 3 non-limited edition models to just a single, highly limited model. The R will start production around the same time the GT4, GT3 and RS would be ending. Surely the factory strives to operate at a high level of capacity utilization.

Your question about activity post 4.0 is a valid one but I don't have the answer.

I'm not convinced that there is a dedicated assembly line for the GT cars. Just not enough volume to dedicate an assembly line. I could be wrong. Does anybody know for sure?

The GT cars are built on the same assembly line as all the other 911s, Boxsters, etc.

Nope.

Boxster assembly is a completely different factory altogether. Cayenne and panamera are separate plants as well.

The Stuttgart plant builds only 911, Turbo, and GT cars. Engine builders "graduate" from Boxster up to GT3 depending on their build times, pass/ fail rates on the dyno, etc. in order to be a GT3 engine builder you have to be an elite level engine builder even within the porsche factory hierarchy. Generally these guys are super long time employees.

"GT" division research and development is at Weissach. Since they have their own little track that they can prevent paparazzi from leaking photos, they can run cars at all hours of day and night. When I visited in 2009 they were testing the PDK GT3 among other things... Since that launched 5 years later it is safe to say that the bulk of development on the GT3 .2 or GT2 or whatever is already done right now for the cars coming out in 2017.

When you drive around in Stuttgart, or outside Weissach you see development cars from BMW, Benz, Porsche and VW. Dozens of matte black or wacky sticker wrapped cars with secrets.

MJSpeed and I went to Stuttgart and Weissach together and saw some stuff on the development table during our tour that still has not come out yet.

CJ, I'm a little uncertain now about what I recall from my factory tour, since I have found you to be very knowledgeable and informed. However, I am quite certain I saw Boxsters and 911s (including GT3) on the same factory line in Zuffenhausen when I was there in spring 2014. I did a quick search and found photos from the web that seem to show the same (our cameras were taken away during the tour). And Eduardo's more recent visit also seems to confirm what I was thinking. Perhaps I'm missing / misunderstanding your post? Perhaps your info is more up to date than mine?

Factoids from the factory tour as I remember them at random:

204 cars assembled in Zuffenhausen presently each day.
Approx. 70% 991 and 30% Boxster.

Apparently no Boxster being done at Karman Osnabruck right now. Cayman only. And around 60 Caymans are being done per day at that location.

To level the playing field of time, a complicated model is followed by several uncomplicated models. That allows the workers more time to finished the harder to do 'RS', Turbo S, gt3 and breeze through the easier (next in line) Boxsters or Carrera Coupes.

Yes, even the cup cars are built on the standard line. The cup cars get pulled off the line when it time for the dash to be installed, because of the full cage already in the car. The equipment used to install the dash can't be used and it needs to be done by hand (two guys). We also saw them putting in the pedals and hooking up brake lines and additional gear.

For exclusive options, the cars are sent to the exclusive department to have those items installed after the car is completed.

Boxster's are also built on the line as filler to keep capacity up and the line moving.
