They are GREAT buys today at $40K - $60K and are bound to appreciate substantially in the next few years. Having owned several of them, they are comfortable, highly reliable, fast and easily tuned to keep pace with most of today's Supercars.
The question was specifically about air cooled cars. Agree that the best deals right now are 996 and 997 Turbos. $40-60k for a 996 and $70-90k for 997s

Lane is right the 996TT is in a super sweet spot right now...

I prefer the 993 to the 964 so would suggest a base C2 MT Varioram car. 993 chassis is sweeter. Overall performance and build quality just a bit better. Leave it stock and it will treat you well financially and give you plenty is smiles. Assumes you like the 993 shape more (I do). Had mine 16 years and love it (modified version).

My daily is my 996TT. I bought it 6 years ago for $50K. It's been incredibly reliable.

At least that's what I'm planning at some point...

P.S. Borrowed this pic from another Rennlist member.
i have bought 964. i want to do a project like your pic. to do it right it's 150000 today's money and that's with A LOT OF RESTRAINT. i would have easily exceeded $250k (no, not singer) but a 3.9 - 4.0 L slide value, ITB monster would be nice. suddenly i realized RS ever at above msrp is a bargain

you have to drive both 993 and 964 they feel REALLY different. i repect macca's opinion and experience, he loves 993. i had 993TT, 993C2, 993 C2s and several 964 variants. i like 964 more. i dont think one is BETTER than the other. they just feel different.

I built a 87 Carrera for track, and it would be awesome to have one that's pretty much stock for the street. Really really fun little cars.
i love the easy going nature of 3.2 and 3.0
i cannot stop driving my 86
it's dog slow, but i dont care. it has that "feel"
you either love it or hate it. my is 100% stock, soft, leans, like a rolling sofa... i would hate it if my RS felt that way, but with this old chic. i love it.

G50 is great but it correctly set up 915 is more challenging to drive. it feels MANUAL. G50 feels AUTOMATIC if that makes any sense.

Good points Mooty. Lots to chose from. 3.2-993. I dont think you could go wrong with any of them. Only thing I would say is the later cars are probably easier to live with if using as DD or touring...
