Default Shavings

This may have been addressed already but for those DIY guys have you noticed any shaving or fragments in your first oil change?

Define "first oil change". 1,000 miles? 10,000 miles? Or somewhere in between?

Change at the 1,000 miles mark.

Change again every 5,000 miles.

Change yearly on low mileage cars.

Get a magnetic drain plug from L&N Engineering.

Run Mobil 5W50.

There shouldn't be any visible metal, period.

Gonna diy. At 2k miles. So I guess the plugs aren't magnetic.

What's the diff in Mobile 5W50 and 1OW40?

They are not.

Good job on the early oil change.

Inspect your oil filter pleats. You should not see any visible metal shavings.

You could always pull an oil sample and send to Blackstone if you're into the UOA scene.

10W40 is not a Porsche approved viscosity.

Mobil 5W50 is Porsche A40 approved. And a better (high shear stability) oil than Mobil 0W40.

I'd want that when spinning 9,000 rpm.

The GT3 has a metal canister filter so you can't check the paper filter for particles like you could on other Porsches.

Thanks for info. Seems I've read that Mobile OW40 was suggested. I want best protection possible at 9k

That's the factory fill. Good oil. Mobil 5W50 is slightly better. I'm all about the directional improvement, even if a small one. My UOAs support this.

Hasn't the M1 0w40 formulation changed recently?

Not sure. Don't think so. We've seen recent changes in Mobil 15W50 in the air cooled forums. FYI.

Actually you can get a canister cutter.

Just had dealer change my oil at 1000 miles. Was told no metal shavings observed and filled with Mobil 0W40. I'm located in Southern Nevada where temps can be in the 20's at night now and get up to 115 in the summer. Is 5W40 a better choice in this environment and if so do dealers stock this grade ?
