Default Trouble idling when cold

A few times recently the car idles very rough immediately after startup - and sometimes won't idle at all and the engine will stop, and then hard to startup again. Sounds like it is not firing on all cylinders.

After a minute or two its fine.

Anyone else experience this? Could it be oil fouled spark plugs?

Something not right. On all cold start-ups it will idle very high in the Rev range for a couple minutes. But engine shutting down does not sound right. I would have it looked at

It should have stored some codes. I'd get it to the dealer.

Got it back from the dealer - no codes, all seems OK. The issue is that you should not let the car idle as soon as the engine is started from cold! The owners manual actually says this! So as soon as the car is started, drive off. Its in the book.

Seems perhaps that if idling when cold and not being driven, too much oil gets into the cylinders and fouls the plugs. The service division had no other explanation for ir.

I wait for the smoke to stop and the idle speed to drop before I drive mine.

Still- no car should stall after a cold star and idling for as much time as you wish. From my understanding; the manual is suggesting not to let idling be the means to warm up you engine but driving should be the preferred means.

^^^ Exactly what I do and have had no problems, along with when done driving, I let idle for about a minute and have never seen smoke at my next start up, regardless of how many days in between. I guess for me, so far so lucky.

Dealers are great. "My brand new car stalls when I start it and let it idle"

"That's normal, you're doing it wrong"

Kind of like the iPhone antenna issues "you're holding it wrong"

If you start the engine just to move it a number of times in a row, that could maybe cause problems.

I typically start the car and drive. However, I have started it a few times and let it idle for a few minutes. Never had an issue after the car idled for a few minutes.
