I love the 9k limit.. Im pretty sure that when it hits the hard limited, it sometimes goes to 9200...

Yes but just because it was designed to be modular doesn't mean you will see the investment to make a flat 8 out of it. As I have stated many times they have a perfectly good modern 8 cyl they can use in the 960.
