Default Another Oil Overfill

Because of all the DIY oil changes and various notifications, I was very careful about my first oil change. Only had one Green segment in oil level gauge before change, so maybe 300-400 ML low already. Drained 7.5 qt, and reinstalled 7qt as per recommendations. Got Overfill notification OK to drive. ? Will it reset by itself or will dealer have to reset? The level should be Min and I expect to add some oil. Gordon. Pix of drained oil with measurement scale. Almost 5qt and 2.5+qt.

It might depend how much over, but I've gone over several times. The problem is there is such a small zone between min and max. If you think it's a little over, it probably doesn't matter. My extra burns off in 1 track day. Just got for a very spirited (high revving) drive :-)

When did you do the change?....it's weird to have that notification on 7 quarts....I will say the sensor in this car is extremely sensitive....mike from CA will likely have some more insight....

The listed capacity of the oil system is 7.5 Liters or 7.92 quarts. If the engine is drained completely, logic says that adding back 7 quarts as a starting baseline shouldn't cause the system to read with an overfill but some, including you, have had an issue with this anyway. It's a real puzzler.

Since you're getting the message that it's ok to drive, I'd give it at least a couple of days. You won't need to go to the dealer for a reset; the message will clear on it's own once the system stabilizes and/or some oil burns off and the level drops.

If it still reads as an overfill, and it bothers you, rather than dumping all the oil and starting over, you can very carefully and slowly loosen the tank plug (it's easiest to get to and it's copper washer doesn't crush like the aluminum sump washers) until a trickle of oil just begins to leak past the threads. Measure out 3-400ml then tighten it up again. Good luck.

I got my oil changed at 1300ish miles, ran without messages for almost 2 months. And then one morning I got an overfill message.

Apparently my car makes Mobil 1. Or it thinks it does....

Drained out 300 ML of oil and new measurement is in the green at the top, upper most segment empty. So I guess it was overfilled, in-spite of what I thought was careful measurement. I use bulk oil and put in gallon jugs, I need to be more careful about quantity in the gallon containers. Gordon

Given the tiny margin for error built into the measuring system it's easy to see how one could make just a small mistake adding oil from a bulk source and have it be a problem. Glad you got it sorted out.

I have decided not to put in my own oil. I am at the lowest level of green and my Dealership has never charged me to pull up and top it off.

I'm a 40 year Porsche mechanic, not a Tech, and I think there is an attempt to discourage DIY work on these late cars. The last 10 years for me have been doing restoration work and 5 before that doing unit work, so I've been off the line doing service work at least that long, which you build a rhythm doing. Thanks for the input. Gordon

Had a similar problem...sensor said overfill and had to drain out despite measuring carefully (or thinking i did). Made a mess draining out excess...will be more deliberate in filling back up next time. I miss my quick release plug i put on the oil tank on my 930 and the dipstick. Used to be able to change the oil in 15 minutes!

I just did an oil change for my buddy and was super conservative and exact on how much oil i put back in. We used exactly 7.2 qts and the fill level was perfect, that was until two days later when he got a overfill warning. I drained 2oz out and the level showed the correct amount. Ok next time I am going to fill with just 7 QTS and add if needed later. It is easier to add than to remove. I called a service advisor at my dealership and he said this oil issue is driving them crazy.

Agreed and how about at the track. Can the oil reading be trusted? The gas reading certainly can't, as it rises on my drive back home. I'm usually going though 1/2-1 quart of oil per track day. But I'm just putting in the min to keep it above min level, as I'm concerned it will increase over max later on when I'm back from the track and I'll need to remove.

Any expereinces on this guys who track their cars?
