RS Steering Wheel in the GT3

anyone know if it is possible to get the new RS steering wheel (similar to GT4) in the GT3?

Mech33 06-10-2015 02:15 AM

I'm interested as well. I think it is TBD until someone can get ahold of one to try...

The padles feel much more crisp on the RS wheel as well.

I can just imagine the cost.

Not crazy about the stock wheel's feel. I'd be interested as well. Keeping the car for the long haul so cost might be worth it.

Suncoast has it on their website for $2870 but the note says it only fits the RS. I'm not sure why or how they know this. I think you'd have to buy the airbag as well.

kosmo 06-10-2015 09:25 AM

the airbag is different

Porsche has gotten very protective of adding products after a build. I think you can swap it out but PCNA just won't allow a reflash for it to function. They seem to be doing this more and more to give more weight to what comes from the factory. It's the same with LED headlights etc.

What's your source for that info?

The airbag module covers are different and the center hub w/ cover contains the airbag and horn which clearly look very different between the two wheels. I believe the $2870 from Suncoast includes the center section w/ airbag. Not sure why the steering wheel wouldn't be plug and play with the GT3. The software is in the transmission not the paddles, so unless the connectors were different (which they may be) the RS wheel should just plug into the GT3 steering column.

also it will be interesting to see if the 2016 GT3 will come w/ the newer, "918 Style" wheel.

Car companies are making it very difficult for you to work on your own car now. Everything sets off warning lights and errors. Yes the software is in the transmission but in order to clear all the errors from disconnection (airbag, transmission etc) you have to have the dealership reset the codes. Porsche is limiting more and more of what the delaership is allowed to reset. No on LEDs (unless speced)No on aftermarket suspension lowering devices (software for air suspension) etc. They are making it harder and harder to work on our own cars. Brakes and tires may be next but I hope they give us a little fun at least for the next decade

Makes sense. Just because something can be done doesn't mean Porsche will let it be done.

Shahano 06-10-2015 03:42 PM

I will ask my dealer this week if it can be done.

Loess 06-10-2015 03:49 PM

The different steering wheel and air bag may technically require recertification so the group buy would have to include the cost of a gt3 and a crash test. This makes the rs and even better value ; )
