'Rubystone Red' / 'Sternrubin', Color Code 82N...

Interestingly enough, I was told at a luncheon hosted for me at
PAG last July by 'Porsche Exclusive' that the reason that .2 997
gt3 RS was built in the first place (now part of the Museum cars)
is that 'Sternrubin' was under consideration as one of the standard
colors to be offered in the .2 997 RS. Here is the story as I reported
in another thread:

Coincidently I know where Master _jcp's photo of the 'Sternrubin' 1992
964 'RS' was taken - just outside Düsseldorf at 'Classic Remise'. I was
there last July and took these photos of the exact same car:
It's a 1992 964 'Carrera RS' for the European market. We knew the color in
the English-speaking Porsche markets as 'Rubystone Red', color code 82N.
It seems to have been standard Porsche offering for all MY1991 & MY1992
964s. The seller of this car for sale in Germany refers to the color (farbe)
as 'Violett'. Porsche now refers to the color as 'Sternrubin' or 'Ruby Star'.
But it's the same color - historic color code 82N.
I recommend anyone traveling in the vicinity of Düsseldorf to
pay a visit to 'Classic Remise'. It's free. And it has a nice
collections of cars in storage & for sale, plus a beautiful old
railroad repair facility used as the display structure which is
a wonder to see!

I earlier posted about a gt3 RS color that had to be consulted & approved
by the 'Board of Directors', as told to me by a factory source. Here is a
follow up exchange on that subject on the gt4 forum which I think sheds
further light on that topic:

Thanks for your insight as always, Eduardo. I find it fascinating, and
perhaps a little bewildering, that the Porsche board of directors has
to approve colors on ultra low-volume GT models before they're given
the green light. I'd figure that authority would lay with an executive VP
or something.

Yes, I was pretty surprised when I was told this. The one that said it
to me was Boris Apenbrink, Director Special Vehicles. And it was told
to me in the presence of Director Dr. Tobias Donnevert , who is the
head of the entire Customer Services at Zuffenhausen - 'Porsche
Exclusive', 'Delivery Center', etc. So I am pretty sure it's true!
It shows the kind of involvement that the Porsche Board of Directors
have (almost micro-managing) of their 'halo' products, of which few
equal the gt3 & RS at PAG! I must tell you from experience that
Porsche is particular concerned with what they in Germany call the
'communication' colors, which is the hue of a new model chosen
to be introduced. It is done with much fanfare by the marketing
& publicity departments at Porsche. Recently, the 'communication'
color that caught everyone's attention was the new 'Lava Orange'
for the .1 991 gt3 RS. Frankly, I think was less than successful from
hearing the reactions of my color enthusiast friends here at Rennlist
and seeing it for the first time in person last July in Zuffenhausen.
Yet 'Lava' is apparently a commercial successful for PAG as we are
presently seemingly overwhelmed with 'Lava Orange' RS...and now
that is a 'Special Color' on the 991, even on garden-variety 911s!

I know this is a bit OT, but wanted to offer \up a thought regarding the
"Board of Directors" having to approve colors. I have no special insight
into PAG's governance structure so everything that follows in this first
paragraph is my supposition. I am wondering if the concept of the
"Board of Directors" approving colors is being interpreted via our USA
centric paradigm as being approved by the Supervisory Board of PAG.
I ran a business in Europe for a few years and learned that in most
cases titles are very different than titles in the USA for what we call
board members and operating executives. The lead operating executive
in Europe is typically called the "Managing Director" (and in rarer cases
CEO) and has an executive team composed of "Directors". Our company
at the time had a Finance Director, Customer Service Director, Operations
Director, Engineering Director, etc. So although they are called Directors,
the Directors as a group (or "board" or "executive board") are equivalent
to a USA CEO and other C level executives, and are responsible for day
to day management of the business. Corporate strategy and governance
in Europe typically falls to a Supervisory Board, versus what we in the
USA call a Board of Directors. Some of our Euro Directors were also
members of the Supervisory Board. Given the PAG Directors own day
to day operations I would view it as reasonable for them to be involved
in some way with key color choices on halo cars and/or colors that fall
outside of normal production processes.

on this topic! Your contribution to our collective knowledge in this area

Thanks Matt for that post!
I believe the 'Board' that Boris Apenbrink was referring to when he was speaking
to me about 'color' approval for the gt3 RS was the 'Executive Board' or 'Board
of Management' at PAG. I will double check with him next time I see him & report
back to all of you!
For those not familiar with how the management at PAG works, we might as well
review their current management structure which I think will be of interest to many
of you!

Porsche AG has an Executive Board (Board of Management) that currently has
the following members:
One of the members above (Mr. Hatz) was 'suspended' last September
following 'Dieselgate'. I don't know the status of his employment at
PAG at the moment. But for the time being, he apparently has not
been removed from the 'Executive Board' at PAG.
Detlev von Platen is a new member. He is the former CEO of PCNA.
And was promoted to head of Worldwide Sales & Marketing based
in Germany after the management re-organization after Dieselgate.

Above the 'Executive Board' lies the 'Supervisory Board'. Presently
at PAG, it consists of the following individuals:
***
The 'Executive Board' of PAG reports to the Chairman of the Board of
Management at the VW Group:

As an aside, so that all of you know some key facts in the surprising
turn of affairs at the Volkswagen Group this year, Ferdinand Piëch
resigned as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the VW Group
last April. That position is currently taken by Hans Dieter Pötsch.
It was never offered or given* to Martin Winterkorn, who remained
in the cross-hairs of Ferdinand Piëch (who remained an influencial
Porsche family member & Porsche Automobil Holding SE stockholder).
Winterkorn weathered the management crisis last April & continued
as Chairman (CEO) of the Management Board at VW until September,
when he was forced to resigned after news of 'Dieselgate' became
public knowledge.
*Berthold Huber served as interim Chairman of the VW Supervisory
Board until Hans Dieter Pötsch was appointed on Oct 7th, 2015.

An interesting exchange regarding a CXX Boxster Spyder from this thread here (https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-...th-pepita.html).
The pertinent parts relate to CXX options as well as to the OP's suggestion that PTS may reopen in April. I have not been able to verify that intel, but thought I'd repost anyway.

Hi everyone,
I am a french rennlist follower. I spend a great amount of time reading forums and i enjoy a lot.
I ordered last july a boxster spyder gulf blue with P11 bucket seats and pepita. I went to the factory last july to meet with Dominic Mayer who was of a great help customising my car at Porsche exclusive. Really unique and great experience. I also ordered side stickers and the table book in order to get some memories of my car at the factory.
My next target now is to order an orange gulf 991 R. I am pushing hard to get one and I am confident that it Will work.
The two cars together Will be a real dream

On the picture that Porsche gave me there was not the light P11 bucket seat available as the side stickers
I finally took off the white wheels and side mirrors and Kept them standard
Inside i will get also gulf blue and full leather with argent stitching
I chose everything possible in leather or alcantara
This car Will be unique
I hope that We CAN launch a worldwide website with VIN number as the one existing on the 360 challenge stradale www.challenge-stradale.com

Hello, I am unfortunately not a 918 owner. As for the PTS of the 991 R I do not have any specific information but with Porsche you must know that almost everything is possible. You just need to ask to the right person. If you have the chance to order a R or any car and you want something really specific I can only advise you to book directly an appointment with one of the exclusive advisor at the factory, jump in a plane and buid your car directly with them. Dealerships do not have the relevant training and infos. Yes indeed it was CXX options. I do not have yet the specific price for each option but I have been told that for the pepita, sticker and interior in gulf blue (baguettes) it will cost arounf 8000 EUR VAT included. So my final price with all options and VAT should be around 110 K EUR + 1000 EUR for the table book. I had to order the delivery at the factory as well to be able to get the book. in France there should be around 60 Boxster Spyder and we are already 10 PTS recorded (viper, 3 gulf blue, 1 Voodoo, 2 Orange Gulf, 1 lichtgrun, 1 Riviera)
Hi, my advisor was Dominic Mayer. He is great. I was with a friend of mine who ordered a 991 GT3 RS and we did it together. I asked for a blue top but only black was available. I know that it is possible for example to get the baggage trunk in full leather. I saw it on a car at the factory. Almost everything is possible if you are willing to pay and wait.
I also saw some crazy gt3 RS with different colors and stickers.
The main difficulty in fact is to be on the right window for PTS and be able to get an appointment. I will never buy another car without being able to have access to it. I believe next window should open in april next year. It can close quiet quickly. it depends of the demand.

Yes, I am interested in that question too.
A number of our 'insiders' have said that
PAG will NOT allow PTS on the Limited
Edition 911R according to their so-called
well-placed Porsche factory sources.
Also what is the option # & cost in Euros
for the pepita/houndstooth inserts on the
seats? Or was it a CXX special approval?
Even if CXX, what did it cost?
Congratulations on your special custom
order!

Thanks Targa75 for the info! You clearly know your way around a
new Pcar build! Very helpful insights on how to go about getting
special consideration. I wish the west coast of Canada was a little
closer to Zuffenhausen to be able to hop on a plane to build a car
with the specialists there like you've done and advised. I'm sure
that would be a cool experience.

Thank you! I must have missed or misunderstood your comment
about whom you needed to speak to, so thanks for clarifying. From
a quick search it looks like Mr. Mayer is a Customer Consultant with
Exclusive & Tequipment, so that would position him very well to be
able to help with these matters no doubt. Interesting option the
leather trunk--maybe that's where Singer got their inspiration. I'm

Perfect timing for your 911R hopefully! Good luck! BTW, I have
reposted some of this info in the 991 GT3 & RS thread since it is
pertinent and may be of a lot of interest to some people on there
too--I hope you don't mind!

I beg to differ from my good friend Daniel (lessthan3mph) on my
reaction to the information this gentleman from France has provided
us. There is nothing that I see that was done for him by Dominic
Mayer of 'Porsche Exclusive' Zuffenhausen that someone like Melissa
Witek of 'Porsche Exclusive' Atlanta couldn't have done for a North
American Porsche customer. The 'pepita', or 'houndstooth', inlays
is a 'special wishes' option that has been talked about since Porsche
first used it in modern times on the 50th Anniversary. Initially, PAG
refused to allow it ordered via CXX. But then we saw the slippery
road start with its inclusion on various Limited Edition 991 Targas
for the European market ('Gulf Blue' in Holland, 'Targa Florio', etc.).
Post 345
https://rennlist.com/forums/991/7889...l#post12418912
So the fact is that PAG has been allowing 'Pepita' seat inlays
on some interiors for a while. And if Melissa Witek today can
not get a North American customer those pepita inlays but
Dominic Mayer can, its not because she doesn't know its
available...but because PAG has made a deliberate decision
NOT to allow it for anyone in the North American market.
Perhaps PAG/PCNA doesn't want to upset their many 50th
Anniversary owners in the US who trusted Porsche to keep
the 'pepita/houndstooth' exclusive to that model.
As to PTS, neither Dominic Mayer in Zuffenhausen nor Melissa
Witek in North American can work miracles for you with Paint
to Sample. If the window is closed, you are S*** out of luck!
PTS is not controlled by 'Porsche Exclusive'!
So don't start packing your bags just yet and booking a flight
to Stuttgart to talk to Dominic Mayer. Do your due diligence
in Atlanta with PCNA's 'Porsche Exclusive' personnel before
you go that route!

I'm thinking of doing a PTS request for Audi's Nardo grey on a 991.2 GT3. Looks like PTS won't open until July 2016. I plan ahead!!
Fashion grey is too light. Black grey on the previous RS is too dark.
Any thoughts? Thanks!!

If you decide to hold out for 'Nardo Gray', I suggest you get

approved after a long process & color feasibility study.

Many thanks to all who contribute to this forum, and specifically to
Z356, 3mph, OMG, Reuben, Sezme, Hinkley, Jupjai & Pyramid who
provided PTS/moral support and/or answers to my sometimes naive
build questions...
Congratulations Puf...
Daniel (lessthan3mph) will love this color since he
almost ordered his gt3 in this unusual hue. He did
switch to 'Fashion Grey / Modegrau' before his PTS
order finalized...but I am sure he'll be impressed
with this 'Grigio Campovolo' color!
It's definitely lighter than 'Nardo Gray'. I am having
a '16 Audi RS7 being built this week in Neckarsulm
which will be 'Nardo Gray'.
But, like all of these interesting 'grays', it changes
its tone according to light conditions & camera lenses
used.

I hope to find out which current Porsche PTS color
comes closest to Audi's 'Nardo Gray' after my RS7
arrives. Although I have seen 'Nardo Gray' in person
several times (it's quite rare in the Audi world too), I
need to live with it for a while for me to 'understand'
& 'appreciate' the color better.
I am still trying to do that with my new 'Signal Green'
'15 gt3 which is a version of that bright green color,
color code 22S, slightly different from my old 'Signal
Green' .1 997 Carrera S, which was a different formula
& color code 'W25'.

One thing for sure, 'Nardo Gray' is nothing like the OP's
equally beautiful 'Grigio Campovolo /Y99', which is a
much lighter grey tone:
***
We know that 'Nardo Gray', a solid/uni color as Daniel
correctly tells us, doesn't look anything like 'Suzuka Grey
Metallic':
***
Nor 'Gregio Telesto Metallic', although not a Porsche color,
is one of many Italian auto-manufacturers 'greys' available
via PTS:
***
Nor 'Grey Black':
***
Nor 'Stone Grey', color code Z67:
***
What about 'Slate Grey', color code 615 or color code Y97?

I think 'Nardo Gray' will turn out to be lighter than 'Y97', and
much more so (ighter) than the darker '615'. I have yet to see
a Y97 in person. But we will have to wait to see.
