Default Break in

Hi,

I'm still confused about p-car break in. I owned my GT3 1 month and have put 370 miles on it. Yesterday, my service advisor told me that my car is already break in but I can't drive it too crazy and no redline until 2,000 miles. Anyone can confirm this? But what I have heard is no more than 4200rpm for the first 1,200 miles. Which one is more accurate?

Many thanks.

Default Porsche NA Headquarters

Have fun with all the answers you will receive, and the tons of post. Many of us drove the Porsche track in ATL , and you see all those cars they are new in the picture. We drove the crap out of them all day long. These cars will be sold to deals down the road. Good luck with your choice.

The official break in from the US manual is 4200 rpm max for 2000 miles.

I could never imagine that...too much torture. I felt comfortable keeping it under 6k...

Everyone has their own opinion on this. My advice is to speak to an experienced technician whose opinion you trust and get their view.

That's tuff when the Porsche dealer head mechanics are the ones telling us to drive it(:

I drove mine respectfully for a thousand miles, thinking that it would make me feel better. So, for a thousand miles, I actually didn't enjoy the car very much.

With benefit of hindsight, I wish I'd driven it like I stole it from day one.

Life is short. Drive fast.

But, if you do you get a 'Porsche Masochist' ceramic badge for license plate.

As has been mentioned, there are opinions all over the map on this topic so TEHO.

What needs to be understood, however, is that when the OP's service advisor says that the engine has "already" been broken in, presumably from the factory, that is FALSE, WRONG, and INCORRECT despite the fact that it is constantly being repeated.

Believing that the engine should be broken in a certain way is one thing. Believing that it has already been broken in at the factory is another. It hasn't been.

Like he said.

I also feel, any break in procedure - other than the manual- below some arbitrary number for some arbitrary interval is just that; arbitrary.

Cars thrashed at the track when new is great. Proves they built a reliable stout engine. Does not mean other break in methods may provide better longevity. Mine have been broken in per manual spec, all have been very fast and very reliable. Would the same have occurred with another method, maybe....

^this.....a couple had less than 50 miles on them 2 Mondays ago and it was an all out 9k rpm blitzkrieg with GT3. I guess they're certainly broken in now?

My belief is that those cars will never show up on dealer's lots or in the hands of paying customers....
