Default FABSPEED exhaust installed on 991 GT3. Vid and pics

Hi everyone,

I recently bought the 991 GT3 race exhaust system with valves that work with the PSE button. I've had it on for a few weeks and I wanted ample drive time before I gave my review and opinion. Thus far, I am extremely satisfied and I enjoy the car even more than before. It has a unique exotic sound IMO. I had the sharkwerks on prior and I have nothing bad to say about it...I just wanted a little more.

I took a 2.5 hour trip to tour their facility and discuss this endeavor in more detail. I was reluctant to buy an exhaust that pretty much no one had installed yet, hence not being able to hear it. Even then, youtube clips still don't do it justice. I have not had the audible pleasure of hearing my exhaust in person yet, but my friends jaw's are still on the floor. They swear it sounds like a street bike, and it's unique to that car. The day we installed it we are at a runway event and we heard 991 GT3's running with stock, GMG full, and GMG bypass. (the GMG sounds great, but the Fabspeed is different IMO). The two friends that heard the exhaust from the exterior also heard the video you are about to watch. They both said it doesn't come close to how incredible in sounds in person.

The Fabspeed facility is beautiful, clean, and advanced. They showed me around and showed me how some of their equipment and production works. I was in awe. They had a 991 GT3 that the owner granted permission for me to be taken out in. He is a Rennlist member, so sir if you're are reading this, thank you very much. This particular car had race cats, muffler delete, and stock center muffler. It sounded incredible. I also felt a nice increase in mid range that I would assume is due having the race cats. After our quick rip we discussed my options. I wanted something a little louder but not obnoxious or overly drony.

I made my decision and ordered my exhaust. A friend and I installed it in about 4 hours. We are not mechanics and only basic tools were needed. The bumper comes off pretty easy. You'll see I also changed the filters to the BMC's. I would assert that anyone with basic mechanical skills can do it. I would recommend a second set of hands for assistance with taking the bumper off, putting it back on, and just some assistance with adjusting the hardware. It's not imperative, but recommended.

Now for the exhaust. From a performance standpoint there is not a very noticeable difference. They claim around 15hp I believe and I think it would be very difficult to feel that on a 475hp car. I have noticed a perkier mid range though. The valve control is noticeable, but due to this particular setup with how small the mufflers are, you can't really expect something drastic. I would assume if you left the stock center muffler, the functionality of that feature would be more effective. I think you could hear a more drastic change in sound from a exterior perspective rather than a cabin perspective. My assessment of this feature is; If it's important to you to have this option, then get it. When I go out with my wife I keep the valves closed. Either way, open or closed it sounds great.

A common complaint I have heard in regards to the stock exhaust or the Sharkwerks (some are pleased that it's like this too) is that below 5000 rpms the car is quiet or tame. With this exhaust it is linear throughout the range. Meaning, you know you have an exhaust below 5000 and it graduates nicely as you increase RPM. Some of you may be turned off or not interested because they named it " Race exhaust" . I don't equate it to a race exhaust. Perhaps if I went with the 200 cell cats they offer or hollow cats then I can see how it would be extremely loud. I purposely stayed with the stock headers and cats because I figured the cats will muffle the sound a bit.

I'm sure some of you are wondering if there is drone. Yes, a little. It's really not that bad at all. With this set up, I expected some. It's hard not to encounter some drone when you have hardly any muffler of sound. It's one of those things that can be controlled with throttle and gear modulation. Honestly, it's really not bad at all.

All this said, I am completely satisfied with the quality of their product and the company overall. Nick, Dave, and Evan were very professional and were complete gentlemen. I love driving the car much more now because of the exhaust. Having the windows down and the rpms above 5 gives me goosebumps, whether its a steady cruise or climbing to 9k.

The video is something I slapped together for now. I have a track day in June and once I acquire more footage I plan to send it to Fabspeed and they can edit it professionally. I will announce an update on this thread with better vids.

Feel free to ask any questions, I will do my best to answer them. Happy Motoring

Is the drone livable ? Anything you don't like about it?

Great write up. Do the BMC filters require oil?

To each is own but IMO it's really not bad. I have a theory that due to pressure and humidity the resonance of drone increases, meaning on cloudy humid days I will notice it more. Other than that, with throttle modulation and gear you can diminish it. There is hardly any muffling so I anticipated a little bit of drone. Thats the sacrifice you make for the true sound of the engine.

No, I can't say anything bad about it. I enjoy the car so much more now. It has such an exotic crisp sound now. Like I said the vid does it no justice and my friends who heard it from the outside concur. I have to allow one of my friends to drive the car with me outside of it so I can hear it for myself. From an inside perspective though, I am very very happy

ANY time you want, just let me know

This is a nice thread, I am happy to have been what little assistance I could've been throughout the process. Really all I did was take you for a ride in the GT3 we had here

Pazzo009,

You're very welcome ...

I also think your system generates an intoxicating sound and is so much more than the simpler central muffler bypasses. I am convinced the throttle response is better. I did not try your exact variant of exhaust (OEM headers, Fabspeed side muffler bypasses w/valves, and Fabspeed Mini Maxflo rear mufflers) but think that your configuration will give perhaps a slightly louder and slightly more aggressive sound than mine.

My own system (after several iterations of testing) consisted of Fabspeed race headers without cats, Fabspeed side muffler bypasses w/valves, and the OEM rear muffler.

I have just sold my GT3 to a California rennlister, who I am convinced will find the Fabspeed system awesome to listen to and drive.

I know you're loving the GT3 with this exhaust ...

Your vid is GREAT!!

Hi, and thank you. I went for a ride in it when you had the set up you had mentioned and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It sounded great but it was slightly more tame than mine. I wanted just a little more and I was lucky to get it.

Judging by your avatar I would presume a RS in coming in the future. If so, congrats.

Yup ... only way I'd part with the GT3 was to have RS on way (October del.)

I'll be sitting reading RL threads for the summer ...

I have driven and been in a few cars with Fabspeed exhausts and every single one has bad drone.

I have to disagree. I just had the side muffler deletes with valves installed this past Tuesday and have not experienced any drone in my system. Sound is improved and as mentioned the substantial benefit is removing 35 lbs from behind the rear axle.

Thats a broad statement and I do not know what versions of the exhaust the cars had. I stand by my assertion of how much drone my car has and given the amount of muffling removed. I am fortunate there is not more.

There are 3 mufflers on this car. I removed all of them and replaced them with a 2 tiny mufflers. The two mufflers combined are smaller than one side muffler on this car. It would only be logical to expect some drone.

To each is own in the regards to sound Vs. drone. It's a catch 22. I bought this car because to me it's a raw sports car. Especially that everyone is going turbo. IMO, turbo cars sound like ****. I have a M4 too and I'm embarrassed how bad it sounds. If I put an exhaust on it, it will drone and still not sound nearly as good as this car. So for me, putting an exhaust on this car was paramount to allow it to breathe more naturally. If I want something quieter to drive I have other vehicles to drive.
