Default Temporary Paint Protection for Track Days

I would like to protect my car from stone chips during occasional track day events but am reluctant to cover the car with expensive Xpel, etc.

What do you think about this:

this:
http://www.trakktape.com/index1.html

or this:

My concerns are:
-application time
-whether it is safe to cover the headlights
-time of curing (in case of warrior plus)

It cost me $1900 to cover the entire front, rockers, and some exposed areas in the back with the pro scotch guard product....seems like a good investment on my $145K car......

I've just had a fairly extensive Xpel installation. But for added protection of certain areas I am going to try electrical and gaffer tape. You can get these in many colors. My car is white so the match is very good.

I have xpel and always use trakktape as well it's awesome. It takes a little practice putting it on, but it comes off easy. Because of delaminating concern, I don't put it on my headlights.

This is what I use, it goes on white but dries clear. I apply it in 3-4 layers and it peels off in one sheet very easily after. Simply mask off with blue tape where you dont want it and apply with a foam roller. It is almost invisible in pictures and only visible close up because of the slight texture from application using a foam roller.

I have tried all the tapes, and this works MUCH better for me. It prevents all of the tire marks and can easily be applied to compound surfaces that are nearly impossible to cover with tape. I also cover my headlights with it, and because it dries clear, driving to the track with the lights on early in the morning isn't an issue.

It works great for long road trips as well! Significantly less expensive than road warrior plus, but looks very similar.

Was that a local installer that you used?
Can't seem to find anyone that's good in the Upstate NY area......western MA isn't too far.

I am not spending here in EU 2000-2500EUR for a foil cover. No matter how good it is the price is ridiculous and would make me look after it like after the car's paint. That is pointless. Not to mention protecting the protection!

I want to admire the beauty of the car without any wrap that in my opinion is only serving the next owner of the car. I am not driving the car with cover on the seats and steering wheel neither

Just want to protect it against stone chips during track days when if not protected damages will eventually occur.

Will give a try to PaintShield as it's the cheapest and looks like it is doing it's job well. Will report later on.

Thanks for your inputs!

My car has Suntek in front.
I spend time worrying about the track and my driving, not taping my car up.

It takes 15 minutes, and is very much worth it for those of us that have OCD about clean cars.

Qbix,

We do offer a product called Tracwrap https://www.xpel.com/products/tools....oduct=Tracwrap

Its a great alternative to protect the high impact areas of your vehicle for track days, autocross, road trips and more. It’s actually the same thickness at 8.5 mils as our XPEL ULTIMATE 10 Year Warrantied film.

Tracwrap applies very quickly and easily. The best part is it can still withstand minor rock chips, and it will not leave bits of plastic and glue behind when you remove it. What makes it so easy is the air channel adhesive. You’ll see a honeycomb like affect on the film, these are the air channels in the film that allow the film to be installed dry, on location and this adhesive also makes it easy to remove.

With Tracwrap, there is no curing process, once the film is on the car its good to go for your weekend at the track, autocross, etc.

As for the headlights, we do not recommend installing any film on the newer generation of Porsche vehicles

If you have any questions Qbix, please reply here or send me an email.

Benjamin Kenney

I highly recommend Plastidip. Colored or gloss.

Forms a great base layer and peels right off after you get home from the track, or weekend mountain rally loop. Bugs, road grit, etc. gone in one peel...

You don't need to cover the whole car, just areas you want to protect.
That said, you can also get creative and paint your favorite livery for the weekend...

from Plastidip (no affil.)

Protect your the paint on your car for the race track using Plasti Dip instead of blue painters tape on your fender, mirror caps, quarter panels, hood. No chips or scratches.

+1

This will answer most of your questions:

Now they are coming out a high gloss top coat that almost shines like OEM paint... this is the only way my car will ever be Rivi Blue... or yellow, or red.

It's kind of interesting watching this product segment develop and grow.
