Default Boxster Spyder Porsche misses the mark

I was actually looking forward to the new Boxster Spyder/GT4. My wife drives a Boxster S PDK and I really like the car. I had my hopes up that we would see a real Boxster GT4. Other than the 3.8 motor there is nothing really to write home about. The car still has crappy brakes, non adjustable suspension, no PDK and not sure about the top. Sorry I am keeping what I have..https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/cussing.gif

I'm not disagreeing about it being very very underwhelming, but the brakes from the Carrera S were fantastic on my 991S, and that weighed 400lbs more.

Yes, they did address the brakes, which were a big issue on the 987 Spyder.

The Spyder is not about adjustable suspensions and XL pizza-sized brakes.

I agree that they missed the mark, but not because of the drivetrain, suspension, or brakes. IMO they nailed those aspects.

So where did they miss the mark? What's left?

Look my GT3 has 410mm rotors and weighs less than this car. What good is horsepower if you can't stop the car. Have you ever tracked a 981 Boxster, if you had you would know what I am talking about. This car still has the same wimpy tires and rims that the current Boxster has not the 295's the Cayman GT4 has. Oh but wait, let's offer LWB's, I say what the hell for. This car imho is lacking. Sorry and I wanted to buy one.

I for one really like the new top mechanism. It's 90% as clean as the 987 design with it down/removed, but putting it back up will be ten times easier. If you need the extra suspension performance the GT4 offers then get the GT4 instead. While you're at it, take the GT4's safer, more rigid chassis too.

I'm not interested in the Spyder whatsoever other than thinking it's the best looking 981. That said, the Spyder has Carrera S brakes, not Cayman S brakes. I guess I don't see the point in having a motorsports suspension, R-comp tires in 295 etc. but have an open top car. Get the GT4 then.

I agree, it should have been a Spyder GT4 with all the motorsport bits included. Not feeling the design with that porky rear trunk, either. The standard 981 Boxster looks cleaner without it.

IMO they are quite wide if the mark in terms of value for money...but that may be because I bought my 2011 Spyder new for $62k...

And to me the bikini top was the most desirable design and functional element of the original, which unfortunately was not carried over.

If you want to keep the weight down for tracking reasons, the radio and air condition are not standard on it.

Agree with you on the price, but not because the 2011 Spyder was substantially less. The price is about right in the Porsche world when you factor in the amount of horsepower the new car has. 375hp is a big jump up from the Cayman S and unfortunately Porsche charges us dearly for every little bit. For me, the value is low because it's not much less than the GT4 which has many motorsports parts on it. In the Porsche world, the Boxster costs less than the Cayman, so it being an open car is not the reason for the cost.

Price aside, the performance level of the Spyder is about right IMO. Should be a very nice car to drive.

I was hoping that the Spyder would be an Boxster/GT4 but it did not turn out that way. It is a big improvement over the Boxster but I agree that they missed the mark. I was looking for the GT4 goodies like the brakes, wheels, front end, etc. It is a great Boxster but not what I was hoping for. I will pass.

I actually love the top. I had a 2011 Boxster Spyder and it was way more fun top down but I still drove it top up 95% of the time because the operation was way too inconvenient (it was my DD). I would have taken the top down every time if it had been this easy.

Looks good. Like it. Great that it has a manual but as with the GT3, Porsche should stop trying to segment customers by model and just give everyone the choice on transmission. As for criticisms on go-fast goodies, I suspect they're saving it yet another variant.

The 350mm are much better than the Gt3 390mm rotors. So many more aftermarket choices and much cheaper replacement cost.

If you're struggling with braking, its probably a mechanical grip and downforce problem that bigger brakes won't solve.
