Thanks for that very informative post. As always.
'White' is the historic & original 'official' color of Germany. It was allocated to it around 1900. See below a 'White' Mercedes competing in the Gordon Bennett Cup in 1903:
The 'Silver' Ryan is talking about dates to the thirties...and the era of the 'Silberpfeil' - or 'Silver Arrows'. According to the legend, the 'Mercedes-Benz team placed its new Mercedes-Benz W25 on the scrutineering scales prior to the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, it allegedly recorded 751 kg (1,656 lb). Racing manager Alfred Neubauer and his driver Manfred von Brauchitsch, who both later published their memoirs, claimed that they had the idea of removing all the white paint from the bodywork. The story continues that the next day the shining silver aluminium beneath was exposed and scrutineering was passed. After the 350 hp (260 kW) car of Von Brauchitsch won the race, the nickname Silver Arrow was born, according to this version.' So 'Silver', or the color of shinny aluminum, was adopted during that period as the Third Reich's official racing color!
To this day, Germany appears to be the only country that claims two racing colors! However, most historians give 'White' precedent over 'Silver' as the true historic & 'official' racing color of the Fatherland!

And while Germany used two colors, America got the shaft when Italy stole their color (red) in 1907 when an Itala won the Peking to Paris run.
America then switched to identifying stripes, made famous by Briggs Cunningham, with his white with blue stripe Cunningham race cars.

LOL. Sorry should had been a little more clear. What I meant was, I get why white is so popular. But When you(I) are looking for a red, black, or silver car, its frustrating to only find white cars available. Only a problem if you are late to the party and you don't want white.

IMHO white is an easy color to accent and cup cars are white. It's the de facto "race car" color.
My wife and I attended a couple of cars and coffee and a concourse, at each event the white cars, Carreras and GTs all blended together. After much pondering, soul searching, and driving all over the state to see colors in person we bought our 991 GT3 in yellow. It stands out in a crowd.
