Mike, at a simple level, it raises a fundamental question: is it better to burn out or to fade away?
I see the world more and more concerned about surviving than living. The GT3 and the likes ate about the latter, IMO. While the majority is moving to survive, or so it appears, many will remain focused on enjoying opportunities that present themselves.
In the long run, I think Stephen Hawkins is probably right... And if it happens in my lifetime, I will have the tool to rectify 'my' circumstances...
Until then, let's all enjoy our toys and have a merry merry Christmas!

And we can eliminate AIDS and the population explosion by utilizing inflatable dolls.

Mike,
Perhaps there is a "driving" gene one either has or does not.
Some people are passionate about it, others, like my wife, view driving as a bore or chore.
Even for young people that may have the gene, perhaps the high cost of modern cars coupled with their age groups collectively greater sense of environmentalism contributes to their loss of interest in cars. Also if an increasing number of young people continue to move to cities for jobs, the dream of the open road that car companies try to sell us also becomes moot.
I recently visited your neck of the woods with a trip to San Francisco where the traffic certainly dampened my enthusiasm for driving. However I was able to get away and drive some pretty cool roads to Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais. Unfortunately it was in a Mustang V6 convertible rental. Actually it handled better than I expected.

I had a pedal car and pedal fire engine at age 3. My parents had home movies of me tearing around in them and washing them in the driveway. My Dad let me sit on his lap and steer his '55 Chevy Bel Air at age 6 or 7. I couldn't wait to learn to drive. I have the driving gene.

John, you make excellent points. I hate driving in SF and the urban Bay Area too, so I can actually understand why someone who had to deal with that environment on a daily basis might welcome the option for a computer to drive for them or not deal with car ownership at all. Fortunately we're about 50 miles north of the Golden Gate and there are some nice places to drive around here. If I had to commute (I don't) on Bay Area roads every day I might appreciate a self driving car, but there damn well better be an off switch!

Mike, you have a wealth of insight, I have learned a great deal from you.... geezer or not. Not to worry, I'm creeping up to that geezer stage myself.

Burning Brakes
I can say that. Today, I decided to take my 31 year old son for a ride in the
new car as he is in from San Fran. We got on the entrance ramp in second gear
and I paddled through 4 gears at 8500-9k. So very soon we were running into slower cars and
I braked hard only to find a Tahoe closing on me fast.
Then the blue lights came on inside his grill.
I immediately pulled over and the Trooper came trotting up to the passenger window. He said,
"Do you know why I'm pulling you over?" To which I said,
Yes Sir! He said "I had you at 98." To which I said, "Thank you very much!"
Because it was way worse than that. And then he looked at my gray hair and
he being the same age as my son... said, I can't give you a ticket.
"The computer is down, and I can't wait for it to come back up."
"So have a nice day and slow down this beautiful new car!" Whew.
Geezer has its advantages.

Being a geezer has it's advantages in the GT3! Since I qualify as Geezer status

Besides there are some competing alternatives to this technology from other companies with Lobbying money on the hill in DC. But from what I've seen the Mercedes implementation is the most impressive. Not embedding magnets in the road to sense and follow!
