I am sure there is a considerable amount of market pricing involved. There are many consumer objects where significant additional pricing buys only marginal improvements if at all. Watches for example. Other areas where you can actually buy more performance like cameras and lenses for not so much.
Where does Porsche fits in this pricing continuum is hard to tell. There is an earlier thread with a video comparing a Speciale, a Mclaren and a Gt3. The GT3 could mostly hold its own a fraction of the price of the others. What are those other guys thinking? So much more to get only so little advantage? I am sure the RS will best the Gt3 by enough but not a gargantuan margin, but at the same time there will be plenty of buyers lined up, as there factors other than just pure performance involved, like desirability, prestige, collectibility, exclusivity, etc.
At the end of the day it boils down to demand and supply
I am sure Porsche has some great minds at work on this.

Or perhaps Porsche has created too many models that have shrunk the performance spectrum? Does one really need to spend $30k more for a Turbo S over its "standard" Turbo brother for a relatively tiny performance advantage?!?
Or perhaps the manufacturer that Porsche has seemingly targeted as competition is aiding in the price points. The F car has made off like bandits by having big price gaps between the regular version and its more extreme brother (360 vs CS, 430 vs Scud, 458 vs Speciale).

How much faster is 997 gt3 vs Rs? Not that much, but people spent beauocoup extra $ on the Rs. In such a carefully curated pricing/market segmentation strategy such as as Porsche's, no reason to believe that the 991 gt3 vs Rs price-performance ratio should sway from the standard. Let's be realistic.. The Rs will sell because it looks cool and BC it will have all those extra little cute parts which make you go into the garage at night to look at it.

it's mktimg
it's irrational
just buy the one u want based on how much money u feel like wasting that day
both cars are not needed.
attempts to make sense to this is akin to trying to understand why u got scolded by wife again..... it's a lost cause..,

Likely not much different performance in real world conditions on the street. You are definitely paying for fluff unless there is truly something new on the car like KERS or hybrid trickle down stuff.
