Inadvertent Downshift
How many of you newbie paddle shifters have pulled the left paddle by mistake and rudely found out when your Revs jumped from 4 to 7 grand?
Going from manual to PDK takes a little getting used to.

Not unusual. Until paddle shifting becomes totally reflexive, and you don't even have to think about it at all, it will happen in "pressure" situations.

Happens all the time, and not a big issue as it won't allow you to over rev the engine. Not a whole lot different from us manual guys shifting into second gear instead of going into fourth, but much safer. Mark

I'm pretty used to left paddle for downshift and right paddle for upshift. Also very used to pushing the lever away for downshift and towards you for upshift. Been driving BMWs and other properly oriented cars for years I suppose.
But every time I drive a regular Porsche with the inverted lever and shift buttons, I mess it up.

I have been using the semi paddles or whatever you call them on my Cayenne GTS using the left side for downshifting only trying to simulate the GT3. I have also been shifting by paddles for my Gran Turismo 4 video track practice.

Outside of pressing the upshift paddle unknowingly, AFAIK the gearbox should never upshift on it's own in manual mode. It should go all the way to redline and bounce off the rev limiter until you select the upshift yourself. If it's really upshifting on it's own in manual mode, it shouldn't be doing that.

Is it because you had the "old style" PDK/auto buttons on one or more cars? That can really mess you up.
What I do to try to help prevent the inadvertent downshift is to change how I drive cars with the older style shift buttons on the steering wheel - like the loaner Boxster I have right now. When I drive cars with the older style buttons, I intentionally ONLY downshift with the left button and ONLY upshift with the right. That seems to help.
Also, I never use the "old style" auto/pdk shifter for up or downshifts because it messes up my thought process in the Cup and GT3. On the "old style" as I call it, you push up for an upshift and down for a downshift. But the 991 GT3 and Cup are the opposite.
P.S. It really sucks if you do an inadvertent downshift in the Cup because the ECU does not prevent overrevs on the downshift.
