My service manager said today that one reason the oil level could go up is that if you take a short trip, any unburned fuel will be drained back off into the oil reservoir!
That sounded like voodoo to me!
Am I crazy or does that sound just plain nuts?
Anyone ever hear that story before?
Tell me that's not true.

Ok, when a car is driven for many short trips over time, and never gets up to temperature, it's possible for condensation and perhaps a small amount of unburned fuel to get into the oil supply and give a false reading. When this happens, a good run at operating temp will burn off the excess and can make you think that all of a sudden the engine is burning oil because the level has gone down. It's not total voodoo but it's not going to happen with one short trip and is almost certainly BS with regard to what caused your issue. They just don't want to admit that they overfilled.

What Mike said.
Here's what the manual says: "If the vehicle is used for repeated short trips, and consumes a normal amount of oil, the engine oil measurement may not show any drop in the oil level at all, even after 600 miles (1000 km) or more. This is because the oil is gradually becoming diluted with fuel or moisture, making it appear that the oil level has not changed.
The diluting ingredients evaporate out when the vehicle is driven at high speeds, as on an expressway, making it then appear that oil is excessively consumed after driving at high speeds."

At 850mi my yellow LOW oil light came on... Anyone seen that yet?
I hope this thing doesn't burn oil like my M5... (Who's oil light is currently on as well). I really hate adding oil to cars this expensive...

It may sound silly, but since there is no dip stick, where do you place the hose to extract the oil, do you extract it by removing the oil cap and fishing the hose all the way down?

I was able to get a sample in that fashion from my .2 GT3. I'm not sure if it is possible on this engine. However, I plan to try.

I bought that oil extractor on Amazon, and had 2 issues with it: 1) I couldn't fish the hose down into the reservoir effectively, and 2) there didn't seem to be too much suction created when I tested it on my hand to detect suction.

I returned it and just decided to live w/ the yellow warning light.

I'm also wondering what happens if the extraction tube gets wedged down in the sump somewhere (say in the slots of one of the oil wipers) and worst case comes apart where it's joined together. Now you have a bigger problem than a bit too much oil. I probably too pessimistic but if something can go wrong...

Mike in CA: 110% agree. I got nervous and "pulled out" if you know what I mean.

it is because of threads like these that anti-tamper fasteners were invented

After I had my oil changed, a week later the yellow oil light came on saying it was over MAX
but permitted to drive. So I decided to wait it out and let it burn off. 900 miles later the light
was still on. It was driving me crazy having to minimize the warning every time I started the car.
So with the help of a fellow rennlister I rigged up the attached vacuum pump and bleeder bottle
to measure the extraction. The best tubing to stick down into the filler hole turns out to be
plastic ice maker line tubing. I cut about a 3 foot length and attached to the bleeder bottle.
Next it is important to do this after oil temp is heated up to around 200 degrees. And then
immediately after shutting off the engine stick the tube down and twist it while pushing it in and
also be working the vacuum handle at the same time. It helps if you have a helping hand.
I was able to get about 2 feet into the engine and then gathered oil.
It turns out I needed to remove about 130cc oil to get back into the green!
One thing is for sure, my engine isn't burning much oil. So I got that going for me.
Which is nice.
Thanks Alan C.! It was all your research!
