Is the GT3 overkill for most buyers???
Having not yet had the chance to drive the gt3 and reading and watching various road tests and comparisons and comments on the gt3 I am starting to wonder if this amazing performance machine is not total overkill for the majority of us buyers. This does not pertain to the hardcore track guys who have racing and track experience. The new gt3 needs to be fun and exciting on the road at 5/10s to be worth it over driving a regular 991 or even a Cayman/boxster. The great thing about the Ferrari 355 and 360 that I previously owned was that these cars were exciting driving at normal or even slow speeds. I hope the new gt3 has this. Because on the road 7-9/10s is so scary fast and unsafe that it will only be on rare occassions we can go there. I am lucky that near my home we have hundreds of miles of rural backroads that are hilly and twisty with absolutely no traffic. These roads are great for road bike riding and are a blast in my Boxster S. I hope the gt3 will also thrill here.

That's pretty much an individual call. Do I need one? No. Do I want one? Yes. Will I use it to it's full potential? No. Will that bother me? No. Would I regret not having ordered one? Most likely.

The GT3 I believe is for car enthusiasts who are overachievers and want to reward themselves versus a Turbo S would be for overachievers that just want a Porsche for themselves. It is good to know that 80% make it to the track!

It would have been my weekend and trackday car if anything. That's why in the end I decided to order a 2015 C2S; the C2S will be my DD, weekend and occasional track day car. But with that said hoping to get a GT3 in the future to add to my stable to keep with my C2S.

Would I drive the GT3 to 9/10 or 10/10? Prob rarely.
But it's not about how often you get to go to 10/10. It's about having the ability to, and when the opportunity presents itself, you are able to take advantage of it.
This may be a stretch, but I am sure a majority of people hardly ever use a majority of the Math they learn in high school, let alone university, but is learning high school level Math an overkill?

Slightly off topic, but another dimension often ignored is whether the car enable the person to reach his own 10/10. If driving a GT3 enable the person to reach his own 10/10, while driving a C2S only enable the person to reach his personal 8/10. Then it doesn't matter that the person is only able to drive the GT3 to 2/10 of the GT3's potential.
Just as an illustration, not suggesting that a Gt3 would actually enable a person to get to his 10/10 ability.

A base 911 Carrera is overkill for most buyers.
If I went shopping for a car that I could use to its full potential I might come home with a Civic or something.
Life's too short and precious to deprive yourself of basic automotive primal desires.
