Is the GT3 overkill for most buyers???

Like fine things in life many are aspirational in nature. I got hooked with Porsche over 50 years ago when our then neighbor bought a 356B. My dad said it was nothing more than a rebodied VW. To me however it sounded differently and instilled excitement. After owning several Porsches I have now decided it was time to go for a GT3. Not because I am going to track it at full blast. Hell I don't even track them anymore, but to me it means reaching the epitome of Porsche excellence. It means reaching a goal of driving the most exciting 911 available. Overkill...maybe...enjoyment...definitely!

As an unbiased answer to the primary question of this thread is the assertion made by R&T in its article article on Performance Car of the Year. They make the point that the GT3, among all the contenders , was the one car that everybody could handle properly. Thus maybe not overkill in terms of the collective set of skills of those on this board but maybe in terms of using such a capable car to go pick up the groceries in style!

Way overkill for me! I don't think I am even running 6/10ths of it's full potential, and I am getting better lap times than most here in SoCal tracks. It is a cheater car for sure!

For Mike Prichinello who says he'd rather drive a Cayman, it maybe overkill.
But these guys end up saying one would buy it and love it and that it is the best road car they've driven. I like to think we're buying this generation's 1973 Carrera RS.
Dan (thinks overkill is reserved for the drag strip and not for a street legal car)

Nope, it's not overkill for me because it's exactly what I want!
That is independent of whether I track or not, drive it or not. It's what I want and I've got it.
That reasoning would apply to most buyers.
Now, if you're tying to determine whether the cars performance is beyond the ability of most buyers, then it probably is. But then again, in this day and age that statement would also apply to 90% of the "regular" cars on the road today. Heck, a Citroen 2CV from the 70's would be ample car!

I agree 100% with all who posted. I believe anyone who has one or soon to be getting one has done so for many different reasons. I for one will very seldomly take it on a track, but I'm okay with that. Will I drive it as a DD, nope, other vehicles for that. I want one b/c Porsche's to me are a work of art. There are times I get as much satisfaction just admiring them as I do driving them. Is there anything in life we really need, probably not, but some of us just want a little extra.

Would I drive the GT3 to 9/10 or 10/10? Prob rarely. But it's not about how often you get to go to 10/10. It's about having the ability to, and when the opportunity presents itself, you are able to take advantage of it. This may be a stretch, but I am sure a majority of people hardly ever use a majority of the Math they learn in high school, let alone university, but is learning high school level Math an overkill?

Gave up racing superbikes, the 6GT3 was a perfect replacement! Driven regularly on the Street and track when time allows. Overkill, no way if this is your king of thing. My son loves it, the wife however only likes to ride in the 911SC.
To each his own!

I agree. You track it at Joilet autobahn?

I think the new GT3, hell any generation GT3, is exciting at 0 mph. Imo- it's the most special mass production car they have made over the last 20 years.
With that said, I'm pretty biased as my GT3 is on a ship right now headed over to Houston!

The problem today is that most people driving are overkill for most cars...
Driving to work everyday I am surprised there are not more serious accidents with the way people drive their cars. I had a loaner Passat when getting my S6 serviced and that thing was horrible. Handling was very poor and car had no power, but yet I see people driving it like they are driving a GT3. Very scary. Even worse when someone with a flat tire is doing over 90 mph on the highway...

you need to drive any GT3 or an old RS and this will answer all your questions. These are rare cars that offer a special driving experience that's hard to find.
