I just watched that video right before you posted! Awesome review, much more descriptive and insightful than most mainstream ones.

Makes me want instant gratification, relatively speaking rather than waiting much longer for an RS.

I think he makes some good points:
* there's no way to form an informed opinion without driving
* on paper, it's a mistake
* it's exciting, but not like turbo for acceleration
* suspension makes this a a consummate sports car for public roads
* performance and handling make it a brutally fast point-to-point GT
* far more civilized than the 997.2 GT3 or RS

There's some things he says that are just not consistent with my experience after barely 1000 miles:
* steering is still crap
* brakes aren't up to track work
* suspension is still distractingly electronic
* PDK is great, but if you want to really drive a 911, go back to at least a 997.2 RS or 997.1 GT3 or 996 GT3 or 993 (any non-tiptronic)

There's no way for a reviewer to reasonably explore the brakes on public roads, so there's no reason to expect it to come up in a youtube review, but suffice to say I have some reservations that the rear end has the same walking and shimmying that causes the 997.2 to want for more rear control under threshold braking. The 991 also seems to have the same lack of directional stability when steering input is zero -- once you start loading the car, it shines and it seems to have unlimited potential to steer at speeds when even a courageous 911 driver would not tempt fate.

I'm of the early, tentative opinion that this "475" (pfft) horsepower GT3 is rollicking big balls in that tailored fine suit exterior. I just can't see anything (including the 991 turbo S) being quicker than this GT3 unless the conditions favor the AWD and the extra power/torque to close the gap. It's just too quick and you simply don't have traction limits, especially on poor surfaces or difficult lines, where the 997.2 RS would be begging for grip or just plain run wide with no recourse but to slow.

Well, I'm glad I've got one of these new fangled gizmo's, but I'm not sure it's a keeper. I can only hope Porsche takes this great step forward with the 991 and says two things:

1. 997 hydraulic steering is back
2. third pedal is back
(3. oops)

And all is forgiven. I am quietly confident my order for the RS will be a three pedal if allowed. That's a bit of a hollow statement, but who knows. I don't miss the 997.2 RS 3.8. I certainly miss the damn 964 RS America. What kind of fool sells that kind of car? I'm glad I've got a 993. I think I'll get another. I think I'll also drop the 991 S and get a 997.2 GTS or some "edition" or other than includes the X51 pack -- just a better car for my interests as a daily driver (with PDK ... I think it's very good and a lot of fun, especially in a daily driver.)

All that said, for the next year or so, I'm looking forward to some great times on road and on the track with the 991 GT3. There's a lot to be said for a car that goes and stops and changes direction in the way this car performs. If only it were 2800lbs and none of the gadgets.

Carrera GT, thanks for the honest review. First significant negative comments I recall hearing from an owner. Any other owners out there who are significantly disappointed with some aspects of the car, or the car overall (compared to other cars)?

Getawayer makes some good points. But I can't get over how goofy he is is when he talks. Especially when he get excited.:burnout:

Just finished the Porsche tour. There were definite rumors floating on the RS having 3rd pedal options. Although not sure if they are normal corporate and engineering discussions on the feasibility of adding a clutch or a definitive commitment to add the option. We shall soon see! For my type of driving the GT3 is a better option.

The 991 GT3 is like the Roman god Janus, simultaneously looking to the past and the future. The past is analog, the future digital. In that sense the GT3 is already a hybrid. This observation was made by the Getawayer when he said the 991 GT3 should be viewed as a different interpretation of the GT3 concept rather than a replacement for the previous version which in and of itself was the pinnacle of that formula.
