I would bet you will be fine. Back in the 90s I used to run the sound meter for SCCA autocrosses at Qualcomm (er... Jack Murphy at the time). The meter has to be positioned far enough from the course that the meter reader is safe. With that in mind, I doubt you will have an issue. The 96 db measurement is probably at the tailpipe.
