Couple of videos from PSDS Barber Motorsports Park
Managed to get a couple of videos with the GoPro at the Masters program. One with instructor Sean Israel on a hot lap showing the correct line on a pretty day in the Carrera S -PDK, and one with me driving in a downpour trying not to go sideways. Interesting to drive the track both wet and dry. Very interesting and doable in case you were thinking about taking a PSDS course and wondering about what happens if it rains. As long as it's not a torrential storm, you drive.
I wish I could have captured my GT3 ride with the GoPro, but I was so excited when it was my turn, I only managed to think of getting my helmet on my head. :jumper: Please share any other session videos anyone has at Barber Motorsports Park. https://vimeo.com/101227162 https://vimeo.com/101225224 |
Very nice. How was tire grip in the rain?

Rubbaman - the GT3, was it a 991 or a 997?
Oops - just answered my own question - saw your other thread, "The GT3's are Back....". |
Here is a random bit of footage from my first time out in the 991 GT3 on the weekend. I took both my cars (993 RS ) but the GT3 was the most fun. I was very impressed with it. Ill try and post my fastest lap soon. The camera was new (Sony A100) and not correctly positioned a situation that has now been rectified. The mic was the built in forward facing version but much better sound than the GoPro.
Enjoy. |
Here is another. It likes eating traffic...
|
Macca. I see you had it in automatic mode. I'm guessing it's the best way to get a hot lap? Manual shifting is only for fun not for efficiency :(

I was told by those in the know to do brake my 991 GT3 track cherry in "sport auto" with sport dampers on, exhaust on and leave ESC/TC on for the first time out (although ESC on robbed me of some speed out of corners). I would not have chosen to use manual in any case as the shift points, braking points and some of the lines are far different than in my 993RS track car which is 22 years old and 6 speed. Also the engine revs so fast! I only had one session in the 991 GT3 as it only had 300 miles on it (yes I couldnt resist!). I wound it out to 9000 rpm in every gear I confess and it didnt blow up. Sounded bloody marvellous inside the cabin even with the windows up! I did 9 laps which included a first lap (3/4 lap) and a cool down lap. My second lap was oritenation and I had a lap with huge traffic where my times slowed down. Otheriwse the times were all around 1.14 with best being 1.14.1. There is without doubt a 1.12.00 flat in this car straight out of the box if I have another day or two with it on this track. To give you and idea a 997.2 GT3 will do 1.13.32 with an experienced driver. A 997.2 GT3RS would be around 1.12.80 with an experienced driver. A 996 Cup around 1.125 and a 997 Cup around 1.09. The new 991 Cup has recently be tested here with pro driver at 1.07.
I should say I have only ever done 80 laps at this track ever. 71 of them in the 993 ;-) |
P.S. I dount you could shift fast and accurately enough in manual to beat the sport auto box which learns immediately it sees 80%+ Wide open throttle oin TPS that you are in "race mode" and thus holds all gears till 9000 rpm bang on....I will try it in manual for more fun now I understand where the shift points are on that track but it will not be faster in manual. I will also not drive it in ESC as it doesnt need it and looses time because of this. Im no pro! I was running street tyre pressures which were cooked by lap 5, but the car just hangs in there - hugely confidence inspiring...

P.P.S. The Gulf livery 964 is a Cup car with 280 bhp 3.6 litre engine on grooved Z214s and very light (1140kg ish with driver). That car has a record 1.13.25 on that track with its owner who is an experienced Porsche race series class winner. My 993 RS spec with same driver is probably at best 1.15.00 on that track (1320kg ish without driver - basically a road car etc).

Macca, those are great!!! thanks!

I've found the Cup 2 tires on the 991 (not GT3) can handle 15-20 laps if you dial in the pressure to 35 hot - I did 35 all at four corners hot. |

I assume you didn't have a gauge with you? Did the GT3 have TPMS (not that's accurate - just to give us a rough idea of pressures)? I've found the Cup 2 tires on the 991 (not GT3) can handle 15-20 laps if you dial in the pressure to 35 hot - I did 35 all at four corners hot.
My comments were based on tPM readings as you can see I have on permanent display while driving. Front tyres showed 39 psi by lap 6! I use cecomp digital tyre gauge same as NASCAR teams immediately after coming in as can be seen here taken earlier on the same day with my 993.... When I next take the GT3 to the track for a full days sessions I'll be aiming to run 30 hot front and 32 rear hot. I have altered camber to -2.00 front and rear last week before driving the new engine.... |
Thanks Macca. Very valuable information as usual. Great driving too :)

Very sorry to OP. I just realised I posted these vids in the wrong thread and have hijacked without intention. Again apologies...
