Default Get the 2014, or the 2015? Depreciation Question

So,

I ordered my 991 GT3 in Jan 2013 and I am supposed to be number 1 on the list. I came back in to test drive something 3 months later and was told "Sorry we put you on the turbo list by accident" (BS!) and now you're number 5. I was upset but whatever, at least I was on the list.

Early this year my order is sent in and of course the stop sale happens and my car is dead in its tracks before it even starts production. I am now being told the car will arrive December of this year and I will receive a 2015 model.

Last week I get a phone call from a dealer (I will not mention which one) and I am offered a 2014 very similar to the one I had on order for MSRP with zero miles, never titled, brand new car that sat until the engine was replaced.

My question is, should I get this 2014 that I can get right now, or should I hold out for the 2015? The only reason I ask this question is because I worry about the depreciation of the 2014 vs. 2015. I'm not in it for the long haul and I will only drive the car for 2 years, hopefully trading it for a 991 RS. Any input would be very helpful.

Thanks!

You will get different opinions, so I'll give you mine. I don't believe the 2014s will depreciate any more than other model years and if they do, not by a lot. The car is desirable now and will be even more desirable in two years, after it establishes a stronger reputation from customers. Unsolicited advice: if you are considering an RS, you sure need to get on that list now, if it's not already a little late.

Get the 2014 now. Soon people will forget about the engine issues. It's the same car. Life is short.

Yep. And one more year of warranty.

2014's have a story and 2015's don't. Why pay the same price for a one year old car.

Since you don't plan on keeping it too long (2 years) I would say get one now (5 months earlier) and enjoy - life is too short, as others have said. Depreciation will be minor.

Unless the dealer will come off MSRP, I would wait 5 months for the 2015. All else being equal, it will definitely be worth more than a 2014 in 2 years when you go to sell (despite the stop-sale debacle), and it will be to your spec exactly.

For me it would depend on two things.

1. Is the 2015 allocation firm (e.g. do you have a commission number in hand)? If the 2015 isn't firm, definitely jump on the 2014. I've been watching the GT3 allocations for the past year and IMHO new 2015 GT3 allocations are not going to be widely available.

2. What other cars are currently in your stable? Do you currently have something that you find invigorating to drive? If so, definitely wait for the 2015 - being a year newer it will have higher resale or trade value when you step up to the 991 GT3RS.

Just my .02

If you have a confirmed commission number and build date, I would go with the 2015. If there is doubt that you'll get a 2015 and there is no commission number, take the 2014. If you are looking at an RS in 2015/2016, the 2015 GT3 will have a higher trade-in value.

Throw depreciation out the window and lets start from scratch

Now, you can have a 2014 quite soon or a reclassified 2014/15 in Dec.??

Well, it appears you live in warm weather so why not enjoy the car now rather than wait 5 months and continue the enjoyment until the RS. Get the most out of the situation. Plus, life can throw many curve ***** so do not look a gifted horse twice in the mouth??

If you do not mind waiting 5 months then take the 2015. It would all come down to timing not depreciation. If some one offered me a 2015, any build I want for Dec, as apposed to taking my car in 6 week -no way. I want to enjoy it now and for me it would just sit Dec - April. - depreciation not a factor

I think initial depreciation on either a 2014 or 2015 991 GT3 will be minimal (if any) due to the stop sale, which has constrained supply markedly (in terms of car availability over the past 5 months - essentially zero - and lower overall production numbers).

By initial depreciation, I mean the short/medium term time frame, under which your intended ~2 year ownership window will fall. The value of a 991 GT3 in a decade is a far different issue given: lack of race proven reliability, application of technology new to the GT3 line (PDK-S, RWS, Electronic Diff, etc), and future variants of the GT3 line (991.1 RS, 991.2 GT3, 991.2 RS, etc - turbo, hybrid?).

2014 will have one extra year and 50,000 mile more warranty. I think that is worth a lot in resale comapred to a 2015 that does not have either.

Exactly, you won't. The 2015 will cost more with a shorter warranty.
