No doubt it has appeal, Nick. But the question was whether it would steal sales from the GT3, and I still don't think so.

If I didn't have a spyder already, I would consider getting a new cayman GTS. I would still want a Gt3, though. A stable just isn't complete without both a mid engine and rear engine Porsche.

The one thing I would say is there have always been folks for whom the 911's rear seat is a useful and practical feature, and yet they don't "need" or want to pay for GT3 or even S horsepower.

OK, two things. While the Cayman is an attractive car, there are people who think that the 911 is the quintessential Porsche shape and layout and that a Boxster or Cayman, regardless of performance, can't truly compare. Having traded in a perfectly nice '07 Boxster S after two years because I missed owning a 911, I guess I'm one of them.

When I bought my first 911 the rear seats were my excuse to comvince my wife. Rear seats and a BIG from trunk....it's Like a minivan

GTS is no threat to the C2S or GT3 IMHO. Cayman GT4? If it's 400+hp, manual, no center locks - they can nearly have a blank check. Still keeping the 997.2 GT3 though

I doubt the GTS would have any impact on GT3 sales either. They aren't in the same class performance wise or price wise. It is still just a little over half the price of a GT3. And, engine firegate aside, they sell all the GT3's they make anyway. The real competition is from other lines within the 911 range. It might, however, continue to steal sales from the base 991 even though the price point narrows.

I am considering a GTS but the reason it own't steal sales from a GT3 is actually because it's priced way too high. The only reason to buy a GTS is for performance options, but by the time you check torque vectoring, pdk, etc and get a reasonable configuration you are over 90k. If you want a leather interior and deviated stitching, you're at 95k. I was sitting there looking at the configurator trying to justify that pricing for 340hp and realized that the GT3 is only 30% more expensive. Granted, 30% is a lot but considering Porsche charges $18k for the carrera s powerkit on the 991 for 30hp, a 35k difference doesn't seem that much considering you get +135hp and a significantly more exciting car.

Once you start looking at leasing rates things get even worse, the price of the GTS is so high and the leasing is so bad that I can (and probably will) be in a 991 C2S with the powerkit for a nominal difference monthly.

I would buy a 400hp NA Cayman GT4 instead of a GT3.

I think it's different strokes for different folks.
I've specced a Cayman GTS just for the hell of it and came to 76.5K. Why would you want to spec a Cayman up to 90K?! It just doesn't make sense. Porsche is playing a mind game with options and are very successful at it!
This would be a driver's car,focused on enjoying the act of driving...with everything that it entails: feel,noise,involvement...
This is the best value money can buy. From the looks of it,at that price it is a much better value than an M3/4,unless you need the back seats.

aren't the best cars, the ones that are stripped? i.e., stripper 4.0 for $185k, stripper gt3, etc. agreed. these are drivers cars. get a luxo benz for a daily.

Yeah, that would be the case for sure. The Cayman GT4 if done right will be for the purists and track guys. And it will take partial of the GT3 guys because it will be cheaper off the bat and also cheaper to maintain...

If the GT4 is done right, I'll sell my 997.2 GT3 and move to a GT4.
