Supercar, yes.

Hypercar, no.

It is definitely a “super car.” And to 99.9% of the public, it is also a “supercar.”

I created my own subcategory of car, so to speak, to fit the likes of the GT3 and others (458, 488, R8, Huracan etc) into. I call them Super Sports Cars. Much more than a standard sports car in terms of what they deliver, not only with performance but with public recognition, heritage, build quality and sense of occasion to name a few.

I do not however consider the GT3 to be a Supercar, in fact, there are very few cars that I put into that category purely because I am a bit of a snob about it When I think of Supercar I am thinking of cars like the CGT, Enzo, Zonda, the new Ford GT and the likes. Limited run with bespoke chassis/engine(not always) that is not found in the manufacturer's other offerings, if that makes sense.

That is just my opinion of course

to 99.9% of the public it’s a 911... GTS, Targa, GT3, few people know the difference.

GT3 is a sports car... a darn good one and nothing wrong with that.

GT3 RS is a borderline super car to me

GT2 RS is a super car just by performance alone.

Tingle test is what really matters!

I think most of the public think Miata, 370Z or Mustang when they think sports car. A sports car is a segment of cars they see every day. It is a type of car, and not something rare, or truly special. When they see a GT3 they aren’t thinking “hey, there’s a sports car.” Or even “oh, there’s a 911.” The public knows that the GT3 is something different. Something special. They may not know it is a GT3, but they know it is pretty special. I would also say they feel the same way about the GT4, GT3 RS, and GT2 RS. These cars they can tell are different from “regular 911’s.” The wing gives it away.

Wow, a three year old zombie thread.
Three years later, the GT3 is still not a supercar in any sense of the word.
Maybe if the top speed was over 200mph. And it wasn't mass produced.

There is no one defintiion of a supercar (even on wikipedia). Add in the Hypercar and it gets even murkier. Below is a web site that I follow and trust a lot in their judgement followed by a list of super and hyper cars. I agree with several others that the GT3 is not a super car. Although I am sure there will be disagreement on the margin on this list, it's a pretty good write up: https://www.zeroto60times.com/2013/0...rs-definition/

WE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING TO BE SOME EXAMPLES OF HYPERCARS:

Bugatti Chiron
Bugatti Veyron
Ferrari FXX Enzo
Ferrari LaFerrari
Hennessey Venom GT
Jaguar XJ220
Koenigsegg Agera R
Koenigsegg One:1
Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster
Lamborghini Reventon
Lamborghini Veneno
Maserati MC12
Maybach Exelero
McLaren F1
McLaren P1
Mercedes CLK GTR AMG
Mosler MT900S
Pagani Huayra
Porsche 918 Spyder (a Hybrid Hypercar)
Saleen S7 TT
SSC Ultimate Aero
Vector W8
Zenvo ST1

WE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING CARS SOME EXAMPLES OF SUPERCARS:

Acura NSX
Aston Martin V12 Vantage
Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato
Audi R8 GT
Dodge Viper ACR
Ferrari 488
Ferrari 575 Superamerica
Ferrari 599 GTB
Ford GT
Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera
Lamborghini Huracan
Lexus LFA
Lotus Esprit V8
McLaren 570S
McLaren 650S
Mercedes SLR McLaren 722
Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing
Nissan GTR Black Edition
Noble M400
Porsche 911 Turbo S
Porsche GT2
Porsche GT3 RS
Spyker C8 Aileron

+1. To layperson, GT3 is the same as a Cayman let alone another 911.

Supercar is 488, Huracan or 570S. 911s are too mass-produced to be "super".

I think GT3 RS is a supercar, but only just. And the GT3 isn't. They're obviously a few bits of plastic different from each other but one has to draw the line somewhere!

To come to this conclusion I did the bedroom wall test.

The RS is different enough to a regular 911 for the average schoolboy to notice. And it's the average schoolboy that we care about here, not the average member of the population and not even us forum members now. Supercar is obviously a nebulous term and each of our opinions of it was decided in our childhood.

GT3 = definition of a sportscar.

If it's a supercar, you're really watering down the term supercar. Though most people have already watered it down to corvette grand-sport level.

Which is why 14 year olds had to invent the term "hypercar."
