Is the GT3/991 GT3 a "true" Supercar??

To me, I really don't even consider something like an F430 or a 458 to be a "Supercar". They are more like super sports cars, they perform amazing, look amazing, sound amazing and drive amazing. But they aren't a true supercar. To me a supercar needs to be ridiculous, like an Enzo, Pagani, CGT etc. A regular car guy could justify and go and get a GT3 or an F430 because he likes sports cars. No one except an enthusiast (and maybe someone who is a little crazy) can justify a true supercar like a CGT or an Enzo. Those cars AREN'T usable and really only serve the purpose of creating an event every time you get in to go for a drive. It is really subjective IMO. An Aventador isn't very usable, but still isn't a supercar in my eye because it is too main stream. A supercar to me needs to PUSH the absolute limits of Technology, looks, performance and drama past all of it's competitors at that time. The fact that the 991 GT3 looks like a regular 911 to those who know no better, makes it a super sports car IMO. No one could confuse an Enzo or a Pagani for its more regular counterpart.. because there isn't one! Most would have no idea what they are but they would be able to tell that they aren't a normal car and their is something special about them. Park an Enzo next to a 458 and watch the 458 disappear like it's a Toyota.

The theory of relativity applies here. To the average car enthusiast, the GT3 is a "super car". It is exclusive, stands out in a crowd, relatively expensive, has great performance numbers and it is out of reach for most people. In the Porsche-owners's circle and other high-end car buyers eyes, the GT3 is a hardcore, race-tuned version of the 911 series, but is not a "super car".

There's lot of new BS nomenclature, but at the end of the day exclusivity is where you draw the line.
I think performance has absolutely no relevance.
If you neighbor can get one too, it's likely not a supercar. If you saw one on your drive to work, it's likely not a supercar.

As has been pointed out it's a relative question. One person's supercar may be another's DD. Performance-wise it's mostly in the supercar ballpark, but bottom line it's not really expensive, outrageous, or perhaps even rare enough to be considered a true supercar, IMHO.

the 991 GT3 is considered as a super car to 99% of the population. The 1% of the remaining 1% who owns 918 and Lafffaffaffa and Veyrons don't think its one.
Its fast, produced in small numbers, it has a big wing and it definitely burns like one.

From my standpoint, NO super car is a sport car. There are very few super cars and though they have superior performance they are not track worthy from a practical standpoint. Thus by my definition, the 991GT3 is a sport car and not a super car.

The only car I have ever owned that I would qualify as a "supercar" would be my 2010 599 HGTE...but thats mainly because of just overall price and the 200 mph plus top speed...even if it handles like a pig. The 991 GT3 is probably the best performance car out there, but i don't know if I would call it a supercar...

To me it is exclusivity( which could be price, limited availability), performance numbers( below 3.5 seconds to 60 mph a must), and it has to look the part. Now, A GTR has the numbers and that is it so- no go. A corvette- maybe the ZR1 but it only has the numbers not a fan of the design. An Audi R8 V10- has the looks and the numbers borderline- have to think on this one. A Ferrari 458 Italia- a super car to me.
One thing for certain there is no right and wrong.

Any sports car that costs over USD$250k today (this number keeps moving with inflation) is a super car. Therefore, the Italia is a super car and although a 991 turbo S is super fast and can probably kick the 458's *** performance wise it does not qualify as a super car cause it doesn't cost as much, look as exotic or turn as many heads.

I believe Porsche has made two true supercars - the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder.
For me, of the multitudes of 911 variants, the GT3RS 4.0 and GT2RS probably would qualify as well. The other 911 flavors are just too common.
I would not call any 991 variant a supercar. Pending arrival of a GT2RS of course.

What about the strasse version of the GT1 and more debatable (but my personal favorite) would be the 1973 Carrera RSR 2.8 which was made for the road in a low production run? Dauer made a roadworthy version of the 962, but that's not technically a Porsche I guess.

To all the hardcore track guys. I have spend some time on CA tracks and I don't recall ever seeing an Enzo, Lambo, Pagani or Enyron whipping around the track with other cars. The only time I have seen Ferrari's was primarily at Ferrari track events and never have I seen an Enzo or some of the other "super cars".
I would be interested in what other have seen. Super cars are not tracked.
