From CH's early Evo review of the 991 to his recent (last several weeks / couple of months) /DRIVE reviews of the 991 (forgot if if was C2S or C4S), he went from praising the car to saying (several times) in this video that it was "weak"...

A bit weird.

Jag is one of few new cars with hydraulic steering. Even a mediocre hydraulic system gives an electric system a run for its money. Matching a great hydraulic rack like 997 GT3 is gonna be tough (impossible?) for an electric rack.

After he so effusively praised the 991S he last tested, even to the point of mentioning the steering is a non- issue. But good on Jaguar. Much needed competition will push Porsche to get even better, and stay classier.

I hear you. The Jag's a nice car, not on my radar, but nice.

Anything is possible for an electric rack, in theory. It can be made sensitive as a vinyl record player needle, and as responsive as needed, and it has been done in other fields (robotics, prosthetics). It just has to be done right, and none/few come close to doing it right now. It will get there and beyond, eventually. One issue is that many consumers are actually not appreciating steering feedback - they perceive it as "lack of refinement" (I've heard that from many people test driving performance cars - made me cringe), so manufacturers are using wonders of electronics to tune that out. Don't hate the player, hate the game - they have to make money to keep playing...

I've heard many times that electric done right should be better than hydraulic, but I'm far from convinced. If true the new GT3 should be better than the last in this regard and nobody who has driven them both has expressed that opinion.

I am not saying it's there yet - rather the opposite. But we do not know if it's because of the inability or because of what consumers want, or at least Porsche's perception of it.

I haven't driven the last GT3 so that record is still safe but my previous 997 Carrera S had the sport chassis and I've owned 911's back to the 3.2 Carrera. The 991 GT3 steering doesn't twitch as much over road imperfections as my prior car, but more subtle movements are still there to be felt, along with proper weighting, precision, and loading in corners.

Because of all the press about ES I was wondering what it would be like before I drove the car, but I'm very pleased with it; it's excellent steering and not something you would even think of in anything but a positive way when driving. if one goes back to the original CH review on the car that's pretty much what he says about it. Guess you'll have to try it for yourself to see if it's just that's it slightly different, or whether something truly meaningful has been lost.

AP famously said that the 991 GT3 steering was designed with no filtering of any "noise" and that it represented their best attempt to deliver 100% of the available feedback feel and information. Was not tailored for comfort, etc...

My cash would go on this Jaguar R coupe before it would go on any 991 except the GT3.

This Jaguar is beautiful, it's boosted, it's a torque monster, it's not a boat, and it can be had for approx. $105k. That is really the sweet spot for me.

Four Porsches over the last 10 years but that may be it for me.

I doubt that worries Porsche at all, honestly.

If you're planning on abandoning us for the Jag forums just do us all a favor and leave a high res version of your avatar behind…..

Thanks - looking forward to it. I'm sure it's the best ever eps - hoping it's in the same league as previous GT.
