Will these replacement engines have replacement original serial numbers so all numbers match as they did at the factory? If not, these cars are going to be killed in resale. Glad I never got mine yet.

I don't know which state your from but disclosure that the engine has been replaced is required unless the buyer has been living under a bushel basket.

Looking at the photo, and some others from the internet, I suspect the valve opens to allow most of the exhaust gas to bypass the core of the side mufflers, whilst still entering it; kind of like having an emergency bypass alongside a chicane at a racetrack. So the inlet you've marked as "primary" would be the side-muffler's outlet path if the valve is closed and the gas is forced to go through the entire internal path of the side muffler but with the valve open the gas is provided with a quick escape, which almost all of the gas will take as it follows the path of least resistance.

Guys, the muffler valves function exactly as they did on the 997.

The side mufflers are IDENTICAL to the 997 - down to the part number.

Thanks. That's quite possible, which leads to my question to Serge 944 below...

Does that mean that sk0t's description is correct and that's how the 997 sport exhaust works?

I am no expert, but from what I understand the exhaust valve in it's default closed position forces the exhaust gasses into the side mufflers and from there it flows to the center muffler. When the exhaust valve is open, it sends the exhaust gasses directly to the center muffler bypassing the side mufflers. The cutaway should help, it is the Akrapovic exhaust, but stock should be similar -

And in the Akrapovic cup exhaust that does away with the side mufflers, you can see the inlet into the center muffler from the side muffler is closed shut with a cap.

So in your pic, what you call "secondary inlet", is really the main one, from the header and flows into the side muffler or center muffler depending on the position of the exhaust valve. And the "primary inlet" is the inlet to the center muffler from the side muffler.

I designated that outlet pipe as the secondary inlet because it's the one with the valve on it, so that sometimes it's closed and sometimes it's open, while the other pipe is always open but that may have been incorrect nomenclature. It's a little confusing looking at it on the car since both outlet pipes exit the side muffler although internally one pipe may bypass the baffles. Anyway, it appears you're right as to how it works; thanks for the clarification.
