British journalist Andrew Frankel (pretty respected guy) has just mentioned from NAIAS that 991 RS will have a different flat 6 to the GT3, new, and naturally aspirated, per the Pistonheads thread on the RS.

Excellent. Hopefully this is the homologation for the next 991 race engine.

-a truly "New" engine
-Just a 4.0 version of the 991 GT3 engine

If they were really serious about dropping weight they'd do something about he PDK. 9A1 GT3 lump dropped roughly 70lbs verses the Mezger motor, then it all got added back via the PDK.
I trust they have some surprises left for us whatever they do.

I'm all for weight reduction, however, if Sir Walter cannot feel a difference with 40 lbs. + weight reduction in unsprung/rotation mass (PCCBs), how is a mere mortal going to feel 70 lbs. of static weight. I believe PDK-S is more like 62 lbs. anyway.

The 918 cheats by eliminating ancillaries, but it's 1.97 hp per pound. Anything even close for the RS would be over 100 pounds and a spectacular step forwards, bringing many of the benefits of a mid-engined car without changing layout.
It's a strange rumor. As I've said before Porsche almost never makes a one-off anything, preferring instead to evolve a design over time. What becomes of the GT3's 9A1 if this is true? They don't look any closer to sticking it in a Cayman...

70, 62, 46, whatever - not trying to reflect grams of accuracy here. Point is weight matters, and as Pete notes above, weight removed from the rear of a 911 matters more.
It's an easy sub-3,000lb car if they want it to be but I don't think it'll get down that low.

70 lbs behind the rear axle is very noticeable, it goes to polar moment, balance, etc. Ask Walter if he can feel the difference between a full fuel tank and an empty one and you'll get a very different answer.

The 918 wears the same sizes but are OEM code N0. These are new, have OEM code N1, and have a ~12% higher load rating front and rear vs the 918. As mentioned earlier this seems to suggest the GT3 RS will make plenty of downforce.
Their availability now before the car gets here also again suggests the RS's introduction was pushed back...
