It'll be interesting to see the % split between DCT and manual for US sales.

Bmw is smart to cash in on porsches mistake to ditch sport gearbox for automatic. Good move. Looks like a nice car and still in a realistic price segment. Exactly where gt3 base price was supposed to be.

Interesting where they talk ab performance with DCT which is far superior to their manual tranny though.

Anyone dare to guess zero to sixty and quarter times with the Duel Clutch - since the manual won't be able to hustle with it from the start line?

I'm pleasantly surprised by the spec, particularly the weight since BMW has been lost in the fog since the E36 M3, arguably since the E30 M3.

Maybe I'll buy one as a daily driver, in an unassuming color to camouflage that heinous front clip.

Yeah right, that's what BMW did.

Base is likely in the high $60K range for this car. Let's not get carried away here we're talking Boxster money. The car is however most of the delta between a GT3 and RS.

Agreed--base for a GT3 is "right where" the base of the M4 is? Cayman base territory...

I think the only point that could be made in the context of the GT3 (because no-one is cross shopping these cars, let's be real) is that the M3 is the only enthusiast oriented vehicle BMW makes, and they chose to listen to their market and offer a manual. Porsche chose not to.

Moving on...

If the GT3 had a back seat, then I would combine the RS and M3 (DD) into one car and have more garage space.

The problem is that the manual is not well paired to their turbos engines. The M5/M6 manual was extremely disappointing to me...lots of lost boost between shifts, long throws, mushy pedal and a very disconnected electric assist kind of feeling when shifting. I love a manual, but in that car I would take the DCT.

If I'm not mistaken, the stick in the F10 M5 was basically an afterthought, the same or a similar unit as the one offered in the later runs of the e60 M5.

The 6 speed unit in the M4 is supposedly a new lightweight box for BMW with rev matching feature.

Let's keep this in perspective. BMW builds around 400,000 3 series cars a year and more than 10% of those have been M3's. IOW, BMW builds around twice as many M3's as Porsche builds Carreras of all types which, BTW, do come with a MT.

The GT3 is ultra low volume compared to the M3 which, I suspect, has something to do with choices that were made......

No way: you think Porsche considers ROI?

Since the 991 GT3 is PDK-only and arguably isn't as pure a track car as the 997 GT3, I'm indeed cross-shopping it with the M3/M4. My guess is that the M3/M4 will be plenty fast on the track, the weight isn't too much more than the GT3, it has a real back seat and trunk, and will cost roughly half of the GT3. Key question for me is whether the M3/M4 will truly stand up to serious track use, but that applies to the GT3 also.
