Default EVO (UK) Review of the 991 GT3

Herewith, as tested on UK roads:

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc...t3_review.html

in summary:

The inevitable comparison will be with the ultimate version of the previous 911 GT3 – the 997.2 RS 4.0. And on first impressions the new car is every bit as good as its seminal predecessor. It won’t be as quick in a straight line, but over a lap of the Nordschleiffe Porsche claims the new GT3 is five seconds quicker, thanks in large part to its rear-steer system. And with the tiny number of 4.0s out there still swapping hands for substantially more than the new car’s £100K pricetag you could say it looks like a relative bargain.

But the GT3’s other achievement has been to effectively reset the performance car sector. It doesn’t matter how much you’ve got to spend – you will struggle very hard to find any car that offers a more rewarding driving experience than this one.

Thanks for the post! Looks like the reviews will be trickling in more quickly now.

2 sec faster than a 4.0RS but who's counting... 7.27 claimed for the 4.0RS and 7.25 claimed for the 991 GT3...Also, contrary to their statement, with PDK, the 991 GT3 is faster in a straight line. Good to see the writer hasn't got his facts straight... Thanks for posting in any case.

The writer also states that the PCCBs are 5 kg lighter per corner, I thought the PCCBs on the 2014 GT3 were larger and cut the weight difference significantly.

Does anyone know if these guys were critical of the steering and balance (understeering) of the 991S at launch? If they were, then I think you have to give them credit for being truthful rather than kool-aid drinking.

far too many factually inaccurate claims from a professional writer to be afforded any sort of credit IMO...

You've said that in different ways three times, thanks. We all knew the facts 3 months ago.

We're interested in the comments re handling, balance, joy to drive, etc, that Evo is well known for.

Now, if they were able to identify the problems with the 991's handling at launch then the comments re the 3 are more meaningful.

There are no handling issues with the latest GT3 so I don't see what you're trying to find... There are no issues expressed regarding the car at all because as one would expect, its handling balance and enjoyment to drive would be great. Shame the same can't be said about the article itself...

That may depend on context/perspective. I would bet that a PDK991GT3 is faster from a standstill launch down a straight line. However, in a rolling start or going down the main straight after exiting a corner, the RS4.0 power would take over.

PDK advantage down a main straight is overplayed, IMO. I've overlaid data from a PDK spyder vs. a MT spyder down a main straight, and they accelerate at the same rate despite gear changes.

Numerous writers for the magazine were critical of the standard car's overall steering behavior, but I cannot recall whether Mike Duff is/was. I think it's fair to say that the "official" stance of Evo is that the steering is somewhat deficient with respect to feel.

I've been thinking about this all day. I have read the "review" a couple of times now and while i think the intent was to compliment the 991 GT3, calling this a review is far too generous. My Q2 2014 991 GT3 will be my first Porsche, I discovered the new GT3 and became interested in Late May / Early June and I (and probably most rennlist contributors) could have written a more thorough and accurate article without ever having been in the presence of an actual example of the 991 GT3.

EVO is a respected periodical and I certainly hope that when they get a true media car and some mixed road / track time the content increases in mass, depth, and quality.
