Sport Bucket Seats?
#16
Porsche likes money - I have faith that there will be a bucket option for $$$ in their biggest market (well maybe that's China now..), and we will be able to buy and install without suffering insurance or warranty issues when they are available.

Good News!
At Goodwood FoS last week and had a chance see the GT3 and to visit with several guys from Porsche UK, and I got word from Andreas that Sports seats will be available Q1 or Q2 of 2014, and they will be a variant of the 918 seats to pass US DOT reg's, so I am delaying order as of now.

ahem ... just a thought ... but if the RoW cars 'already' have a sports bucket seat (presumably derived from the previous gen sport bucket seat which *had* DOT approval) would it not be more likely that if the DOT stds are an evolution (I know a big assumption) of the previous ones under which that seat was approved, that it would make economic sense for Porsche to simply modify the current seat to meet those new stds?
My money is therefore on a modified SB seat, not a new one that may appear in the 918.

unless...
of course they are designing a new "Clubsport" seat for the RoW that (highly unlikely though it may be) will also be DOT approved (this will never happen).
This is not so daft as it may sounds, since I suppose they need to get the 918 seat (whatever that will be) also approved in order to sell them here...

Not mine...
Existing 997 CF seat cannot be modified (or at least not cost-effective) due to the new 2014 DOT regulation requiring height adjustment etc. for any seat sold in the US...

From Automobile Mag review:
Seats:
-At launch, U.S. cars are offering two seats and the Europeans can choose from three different seats. The optional carbon fiber sport bucket seats that graced the majority of cars on the German press event are not available in the USA. They are aggressive and very similar to the seats that were offered in the USA in the later 997-generation cars like the 911 GT2 and GT3 4.0. This newest iteration of that seat unfortunately doesn't meet U.S. safety regulations, due to the design of the side airbags. Luckily, purists looking for a hardcore seat aren't left out in the cold. Porsche is developing a new sport seat for worldwide sales. Look for those to be added to the U.S. options list within the next six months. The seat will be offered in both the GT3 and the new 911 Turbo. It does not have a folding backrest like the outgoing seat -- nice for access to the rear storage area -- but it will offer power height adjustment. When we questioned Porsche regarding the weight of the power mechanism, they told us that the setup is as light or lighter than a manual setup due to the advancements in brushless electric motors. Keep in mind that these optional seats have a fixed backrest and offer far less adjustability compared to the standard sport seats plus or the optional $2635 adaptive sport seats plus. Figure the upcoming sport bucket seats will cost around $4000
There is hope.....

Production starts for the 918 on 9/18 with deliveries to begin in December. The new seats in the GT3 are supposed to be a variation on the 918 seats. I don't know if the delay on the GT3 seats is a supplier issue or whether they have to be certified seperately for the GT3 chassis; maybe both.
