Porsche took this race car, made it street legal, and released the 996.1 GT3 street car, a copy of the race car made street legal. Same aero, same engine, same transmission, same brakes, just a softer suspension for street use and the safety required on a race car.

For the next 14 years, this race proven engine made it to both the GT3 Cup and the GT3 street car.

The 991 Wannabe-GT3 shares nothing in particular with the real GT3. It is not a street version of a race car, it is a street car focused on street use, spirited street use.

This wannabe-GT3 will be a sales success for VW, because they have added a cheaper engine, while increasing MSRP, and it is sold with an automatic transmission (most people love auto boxes). However, it will be more boring than the previous car due to PDK, extra weight, sofa seats.
True. The whole point of the 996.1 GT3 was homologate the GT3 race cars, so the road cars used essentially the same engine, transmission and brakes as the race cars. The street cars even came with fiberglass bucket seats and no side airbags. The 996.1 GT3 and 991 GT3 are really opposites as with the 996.1 GT3 Porsche proofed out the drivetrain first in the race cars and then introduced it in the road cars. With the 991 GT3, neither the engine or the transmission in the road car have anything in common with the new race cars and Porsche has no plans to ever use the street PDK in a race car.

Basic philosophical question, should Porsche label a model a "GT3" if the model has no race pedigree?

perhaps they should hsave ended the "GT3" name with the 2011 model year and introduced a new 991 name such as "Carrera R" and soon to arrive "Carrera RS".

Agree. It started as a technical term, now it is just another brand ripe for the picking. What exactly is "GT3" about this new GT3?

The differentiation between the 997.x and 996 GT3s and their respective Carreras is the same as as the 991 GT3 differences compared to the 991 Carrera.

If Porsche goes on to race this engine and especially this transmission, then this GT3 will be "more" of a GT3 "road car" and more in common with the 991 GT3 Cup (so to speak) than its predecessors.

If there's any substantial complaints about the 991 GT3, the issues revolve around curb weight and the demise of the third pedal actuation of the clutch.

I'm not losing any sleep over PDK. I'm still concerned about electric steering assist. I'm not at all impressed by the 991 GT3 being 200 or 300 lbs heavier than I think Porsche could have done straight out of the parts bin, but they're apparently leaving the lightweight goods as differentiation for the RS.

The problem being, early adopters of the 991.1 GT3 will have "the heavy one" and the 991.2 GT3 (and whatever RS) will surely benefit from a lighter car.

Quick Reply: The 991 GT3 is the new 996.1 GT3!
