Removing engine tray : )

Should I?

Pros and Cons?

Thanks!

LoL why? Has yours arrived already!?

911rox 03-09-2013 10:28 PM

Pro: Weight saving of 2-3 kg to offset some of the weight gain to the car from having being fed too many Porsche marketing donuts...

Con: The realisation that you no longer have a mezger ;)

TRAKCAR 03-09-2013 10:46 PM

Less weight, more cooling.

Ahmet 03-09-2013 10:48 PM

I doubt the more cooling part. Engine trays are there to optimize air flow, I'd be surprised if there wasn't less cooling.. Of course the majority of extracting heat from the engine happens through the radiators at the other end of the car so I doubt there'd be a big difference in anything other than engine compartment temperature and possibly localized heating.

HiWind 03-09-2013 10:49 PM

Isn't tray there for aero reasons?

TRAKCAR 03-09-2013 10:58 PM

Removing side mufflers is for cooling and less weight and they put those on for a reason. I guess some aero but with the CUP lip scraping the floor, how much is I under the car..

FWIW, Porsche has said the angle of the tray rising toward the rear creates a diffuser effect and creates additional DF as part of the aero package.

Visit the 993 board - this intense philosophical debate is unresolved after nearly 20 years (!).

FWIW, my 993 doesn't have one, but the removal does help with that car.

Trolling again? :roflmao:

The answer depends on which oil you use, and what you think of HP vs TQ

aussie jimmy 03-10-2013 10:37 AM

and whether the tray has deviated bolts

Unresolved is a bloody understatement! More cowbell!

But, put your guns down gents. Guest got it right.
Considering that Porsche decided that no 993 part numbers ;) are worthy for this car, I was just trying to bring some 993 charisma in the new GT forum..

Too bad that this time no one will post "throw the damn tray away, Cup cars don't have it!.. "

Maybe next year ? Hopefully next year.. I'm sure next year.
I mean how can you call a car a GT3 and not race its engine. Impossible! Right ? :)

Veloce Raptor 03-10-2013 05:16 PM

I personally don't GAS whether they race the 9A1 or not (although IIRC, it has raced very successfully in CTSCC in the 997GTS). It's a nice "gimme" but IMO has no bearing on whether the 991 GT3's drivetrain is worthy--only how well it's built will determine that. It DOES, however, have bearing on whether the GT3's price is worthy. IMO, if the Metzger or anothe rtrue race-based engine is used, the GT3's price is supportable. If not, then it's not.
