Center Lock Nut Experiments
Hi everyone, we're building a 991 GT3 to raise money for cancer, in our effort we want to pay homage to classic Porsche's of the past. I’m wondering if anyone has done color changes to modern center lock nuts. I want to replicate the red & blue nuts from a CGT, my concern is durability as this car will go on rally’s, track days etc. My first thought is trying out Cerakote because the coating is thin and durable. I’d love to know if anyone else has experimented with this idea.
Thx,
Jon

Jon, cheers to a good cause.
If you are going to do this, make it available for other RLs to buy to either contribute to your cause or to spread the love.
I too would love red and blue CL nuts.

For the 997.2, the factory had a red anodized
option. However, I've not seen anything like it for the 991.

Anodize the CL nuts to preferred color. This is what the CGT and 997 nuts were.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to offer their suggestions and input. Once the build is done I'll definitely be posting pictures and a donation link along with background as to why we decided to do this build. All the best! Jon

Hey, Jon. Love the idea and had previously toyed with this. I shied away from cerakote as it has some lubricating properties that I didn't like for a centerlock nut. That said, the centerlock mechanism does have a locking pin but I'd 100% rather have the anodized coating over a cerakote. I think striping the anodizing off to re-anodize them red and blue could be difficult but completely doable. It seems most folks use caustic soda solution to strip the anodizing off the aluminum and then anodize and apply dye. I'd imagine you could get this done professionally for not a ton of money and I may look into it myself. Keep us posted

CGT was anodized. However, ive seen a couple of CGT's with really badly faded anodizing. Probably from harsh cleaning products over the years. Cerakote is tough assuming you prep properly and use the heat cure (not the air cure product).

I think I'm going to go the anodizing route. Once we finish the wrap we'll send the CLN's out to be refinished. I'll post pictures once we complete them.

RE: Centerlock Experiment Completed
As you know, I was eager to try and pay homage to Porsche Racecars of the past for our latest project. We bought a 2nd set of centerlocks for our 2015 991 shop car and started to experiment. We disassembled and stripped a stock set of CL's, fully polished them and found a single stage satin anodized powdercoat that can take the abuse of 475Ftlbs of torque and track driving. Here is the end result, the red is perfect, the blue is a little dark but you're very limited in color options. We're currently touring our car to raise money to help people in active cancer treatment. Please share the link to our charity page with your friends and family.
